I wondered about that- I used the whole tube on her when I got her home. Maybe it was too much?

How soon is too soon? You're supposed to do it once every month right?

Thanks. I am glad, too. A lot of people gave me flack for not going to the pound instead, but this baby was in a worse situation than a kennel. And she would probably have been taken to a kill shelter anyway, once the authorities investigated the "breeder".

Anyhow, yea, my last Sheltie got lyme disease, even on flea preventatives. She was okay though. I'm gonna have to do some research about things that work against ticks...

I used the entire individual plastic dosage thing on her. Is that too much? My vet didn't instruct me to use any less than what was in there. As for the Advantage, my vet told me that it was more potent than Frontline, despite the different active ingredient. I don't know about Advantix. As I'm sure you can relate, after what happened I'm terrified to do anything else to this poor puppy. I think I may just wait until she's like 10-14 weeks or something..

That, and I hear those things just don't work. And I'm sorry, a little bit of a chemical flea/tick killer is far better than a nasty tapeworm and its squirmy egg sac segments dropping everywhere. BLECH.

Well, the EPA now has doubts as to whether or not those medications actually are safe for puppies. I may want to try it again, but not anytime soon. I think I should probably explore other options before I go reapplying it (this is of course, assuming I gave her the right dosage).

Thanks for all the help, you guys. I will keep you posted on the situation, but if you have any more/different suggestions PLEASE keep them coming!!
 
I've used the Sargeants Natural Defense for several years now on my epi dog with no bad effects and I can tell you that it does work at least as well as the Frontline and Advantix I've used on my other two.

However, I would certainly not use a chemical product on your puppy after the reaction she had. If you're concerned about fleas, think about sprinkling diatemaceous earth into her coat. It kills every insect including fleas and ticks and it's safe enough for them to eat. In fact you can also put it in their food to keep parasites away. It's also inexpensive.
