Question on Seresto....

I hate those systemic flea and tick controls but have to use them as collars don't work with long haired dogs. Fortunately here we have 4-5 months of winter and cold that I can take them off the meds for a bit of rebuilding.

Unsolicited advice... careful with that line of thinking. We're in CT. We had cold, we had 5 feet of snow this winter. Ticks flourished.... Why? You need an artic spell prior to snow cover and that only works if you've removed fallen leaves and undergrowth from your property. The snow we had prior to our cold weather gave ticks a nice insulated covering to provide protection. Our ticks are worse this year after our very wintery winter. I do expand my timing in the winter... I go 45 days instead of 30... sometimes. Mainly if we are walking less due to salt on the roads.

I agree the yard where the Shelites spend their time is raked free of leaves and brush but it is true if it snows before an arctic cold blast they are protected.. Plus squirrels and chippies run all over the place dumping fleas-- so far we have been lucky and I don't walk them in the winter as we live on a country road where the snow banks are piled to the edge of the road plus salt on the road.. In the summer I get ticks on my I am sure come from the dog fur- one bite and they die but get on me before they do that. I have been treated for Lyme twice now. Fortunately I get most of them before they embed or soon after they do.. Our yard this year was 2-21/2 feet deep in snow the whole year with drifts up to 4 feet in some places -- I hope that kept then at bay. They now are on nextguard and will be till near dec,
 
I do the same thing per Dr Jean Dodd’s protocol. Mine are on both heartworm and tick meds only from April to fall. While I know ticks can live in the cold I think it’s healthier for my dogs to be on preventatives as little as possible so I just keep an eye out for any off season renegades. Our tick treatment company has also begun to extend treatments into the fall months for added protection. My dogs didn’t have a single tick last year.
