Questions About AKC CGC Certification

I found a local training facility that is certified for AKC CGC. They did not have much on their website about it though, so I'm hoping someone here can help me out. My question for those of you who have CGC certified dogs is if it's just a test or if you have to go through specific CGC training? Did your dog have to be in AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy as a puppy first?

Daisy went through basic & intermediate puppy training at Petsmart. She'll be 4 in August, so I was wondering if she would be eligible to take the CGC test or if more training would be required? If so, how much does the training run? Also, how much does the CGC test itself usually run?

Thanks in advance!:smile2:

the testing items for CGC

your dog does not need to have attended any formal training classes- so long as they can perform all the test items, then they will pass.
Cost will depend on several things- including if you want it to be registered as a title.

you would need to contact the training place to see how much they charge for classes and/or testing.

Cranberry and Dixie got tested at a dog show where they were offering CGC testing- I don't recall how much it was and at that time, it wasn't offered as a title. I could pay a fee now and get their CGC registered as titles.

I have gotten CGC certificates on 4 dogs and none actually attended a specific CGC class. Basic obedience/manners classes and for Cran and Dix, agility classes also.

You can easily go to AKC website and take a look & also print off the testing points that an instructor will test your dog on. It makes it easier. toanser your question about the S.T.A.R. program, no your dog does not need it.

If Daisy has gone thru basic & intermediate,it would be my guess she is ready, unless once you print off the testing points, you know for sure there may be some she is not solid with. Then you can pin point those and work on them.

I have to tell ya, I never really paid any attention to the test points, until about 4 days prior to Trapp's test. But he was so ready, and he shined during his test.

Jasper I was a wreak...honestly his sit/stay prior was not all that solid. But testing day it was done here at my home, and there were 31 dogs in my yard, and some looking at him thru a glass storm door while he took his test on the sun porch. He nailed everything. Made me proud.

Thanks!:smile2:

That's great that your dogs did so well - especially Jasper last minute! He obviously did better just winging it - even with all the pressure, lol. After looking at the requirements, I think Daisy's main weakness is her shyness, so it will be something to work on first.

I did take classes before the test and I think it really helped me prepare for the test. Shelby was 1 when we took it so we had to work hard on the distractions and sitting still to be brushed. She passed with flying colors and she was the only dog in the class to pass.
