Recurring urinary infection

Hi, I'm new to the forum-- just found it by searching for information about urinary problems in shelties. My sheltie, Mandy, is about 9 1/2 years old, and until last year had never had any health issues at all. Then, in January 2010, she developed a really bad yeast infection. The vet put her on Cephalexin 500 mg for the infection (mostly in her ears, I believe) and Fluconazole 100 mg for the yeast. She stayed on the Fluconazole for quite a time-- 3 weeks to a month, I think. The medicine, along with bathing with medicated shampoo, took care of the yeast infection, and her skin has been great since then-- KNOCKIN ON WOOD!!!
Then in early December 2010, we noticed that she was having little "accidents" and stopping to squat repeatedly, and then we saw little spots of bloody mucous on the ground when she tried to pee. We rushed her to the vet, who did bloodwork and a urinalysis. The vet thought it was probably just a UTI, so put her on Rimadyl for pain and Amoxil for the infection. She got better quickly--- but exactly one month later-- she developed the same symptoms. So, back to the vet, who did xrays to check for stones-- thank goodness there were none. So she came home with another round of amoxil -- 250 mg. A couple weeks later, Mandy broke a toenail into the quick, so.... back to see Dr. Beth! She cauterized the nail, bandaged it, etc, and put Mandy on another round of Amoxil just to make sure she didn't get an infection from the nail.
So, now here we are-- another 2 weeks later, and this afternoon, Mandy is having the urinary symptoms again-- dribbling blood spots. Other than that, she acts perfectly fine. She eats, drink, runs, plays just like normal. I just don't know what to do. I had read somewhere online, but sometimes UTI's in dogs can take a very extended round of antibiotics to really knock it out? Or maybe Amoxil isn't the correct antibiotic to use? I am interested in trying the cranberry and vitamin C supplements. Any other ideas- or do anyone have anything to suggest that I could ask my vet about?
Thanks for any help

I'm sorry your baby isn't feeling well. My girl had a lot of UTI's as a puppy, but she seems to be doing better now. Her issue is her urine PH is not acidic enough. She takes a daily vitamin C pill to increase her urine acid. This is the only thing that has helped her.

If your girl keeps getting UTI's and the same antibiotic isn't working, I would request a Urine Culture. This will tell you exactly what bacteria is causing her UTI's. Then your vet can prescribe an antibiotic to treat that specific bacteria.

I would also ask your vet to culture her urine so that they can find the correct antibiotic for your girl.

Once she is cleared with the proper meds, you may want to ask your vet about putting her on something that can help with preventing them. My vet has a cranberry/vitamin C supplement that he uses.

Welcome to the forum!

I agree--get a urine culture done. A urinalysis just shows the presence of bacteria, a urine culture will show exactly what kind of bacteria it is. A specific type of antibiotic can be prescribed for the type of bacteria that is present.

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely ask the vet about the culture. We have an appointment this afternoon, so hopefully we'll get some answers soon-- making notes of everything I need to mention to her.

I'm pretty worried. A couple days ago, while petting Mandy, I noticed a lump or bump between her front legs. It's about the size of a large grape and feels soft. I'm going to ask Dr. Beth about that too-- but hoping and praying that it's nothing serious.

I'll let you know what we find out! And, thanks again!

Ah, I hope Mandy is well and that appointment goes well. Praying for all the best!
