Red itchy nose?

Hi.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid as a new Sheltie owner, but Perry (9 months) seems to be scratching his nose more than usual, and it's got a definite reddish tinge to it (photo).

Is this something I should be concerned about? Worth a trip to the vet?

Thanks for any input!

It could be an allergy reaction...have you checked him for any sign of fleas...on some dogs even 1 flea will cause big issues. Try putting an anti itch cream on the top of his nose, rub it in well and see if it helps. At the moment I wouldn't be too worried, but if it continues to bother him or gets worse it would be wise to get it checked by your vet.

Thanks for the advice. Are there specifically anti-itch creams for dogs, or would human ones work?

It could also be a bacterial infection, if it doesn't clear up i'd take him to the vet and they'd probably prescribe an antibiotic ointment for it.

My vet recommends human Cortaid or Cortizone-10 for itch relief. But if you don't see improvement soon I would definitely have your vet check it out.

Hi. Perry's skin discoloration has been getting worse for the past month or so, as you can see in this photo. He itches his nose once in a while, too. I see him scratch it with his paw a couple times a day.

The vet thought it might be a fungus, but that test came back negative. Next he gave us some antibiotics in case it was a bacterial infection, but it's almost the end of the course and it hasn't had an effect.

My wife, who is a (human) doctor thinks it could be a malignancy, which obviously would be horrible.

I'm going to try going to another vet, but does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks.

There is a skin condition in Shelties called dermatomyositis or DM. I have had no personal experience with this condition in my own Shelties or any Sheltie I have fostered so I may be way off base on this, but if no treatment recommended by your vet seems to be working it might be worth checking this out. The following site has a good write-up:

Hopefully Perry's skin issue is just an allergy to something that hasn't yet been id'd.

Perhaps some sort of parasite, such as mites? Does your dog get regular parasite treatment with an ivermectin-based product? If not, that might help, if it's parasitic.
