Red Mange

Hello!

Poor Tobsters was diagnosed with Red Mange this week :( Thankfully it's just localized on his right ear, the vet here in Quanzhou is pretty hopeful that it's just a one time deal and won't require maintenance drugs. He's currently taking antibiotics once a day for the next 3 weeks.. we also have a topical and a spray we're supposed to use twice a day for the next two to three months.

Just wondering if anyone else out there has dealt with this before. Apparently it's a hereditary issue (Toby was a puppy mill rescue, poor guy) and we plan on getting him fixed a couple weeks after we get back to the States.

We've started him on a skin&coat supplement hoping it will help- any specific brands stateside that seem to work really well? We're willing to try anything that can boost his immune system and make him less itchy soon! I can't wait until we can get him to an American vet...

Thank you for the response! It's just been is right ear and one of his back paws. The night before we took him in we actually gave him a bit of benadryl because he was literally scratching the hair off his ear. They did the pluck test and we saw those little mites under the scope. Since starting the meds 2 1/2 days ago he probably only scratches a couple times a day now (I work from home). His ear's still red, but it's looking better.

The vet put him on Marbofloxacin for the infection and the spray and gel for the mange. Seems like it's not what the standard protocol is in the states (which I gathered from my vast knowledge brought to you by google...) but I know their resources here are semi-limited. We're unexpectedly moving back to Atlanta in less than month, so I'm just happy as long as it doesn't spread until we get to a vet then.

...now that I'm thinking about it, though, when we first rescued Toby his back two feet were pretty bare on the sides, we were told it was because he spent the first 5 months of his life on concrete. The hair has started to grow in, but he has gnawed on them periodically? I could just be acting neurotic, but who knows.

It's amazing how attached you get with these pups! We've only had him since late August 2010, but man, I'm totally fine with dropping whatever cash I need to to make sure our little puppy dog feels better (which is probably a good thing, because from what I've read, mange can get pretty expensive pretty quickly!).

What infection?
Demodex of itself does not itch, that's one way it is suspected. However a secondary bacterial infection can. That would be unlikely in a small localized patch. That was why I was curious.
Perhaps there is something else going on in the ear, itchy and with bacterial infection, with the demodex as a complication. I'm sure they have conditions over there with which I am not familiar.
It is a little odd, however we should not interfere with other veterinarian's cases when we haven't seen the dog or spoken to the veterinarian.
Best of luck to Toby with this, good to hear he has found such a caring owner. - Dr. Mac

Thanks for the words of encouragement! We just booked our tickets back and we'll officially be home the first week of 2nd week of June. I'll probably give Toby a day or two before we go to the vet, but it's definitely on the top of our list!

I'm just happy it only 'appears' to be a skin problem. We've talked with the government vet here who's in charge of import/export papers and said it'll be no issue to get him through customs. Thank goodness!

I'll have to go get some plain yogurt at the corner market in the morning :) Hopefully we'll have an update on all of this in a month or so!
