Reena was maybe large for a sheltie and was about 35 pounds and tri-color.
Last Summer I brought her in to the vets because she was not eating well, and at first they could not find a reason for it. The thing was she was known for her very strong appetite, and this was not like her.

When it was later found that she had cancer, and that it was stealing her weight and her appetite...I did not want to put her through a painful operation, and great expense, when she was old anyway and there was so little to gain even if things worked out well. So we put her down, even though it broke my heart...and we were happy that we still had our smaller sheltie, another female named Brandy. Reena had always treated the younger dog like her puppy.

Well, after paying bills I had a little money, so two weeks after her death, I purchased a new puppy(Toby), a boy, whose photo is our avatar. It was our first male, and had a different personality for sure. As he grew up we began to see that his sheltie face is very similar to Reena's, and he grew into a similar weight as hers was and sometimes had a similar personality.

Toby keeps alive our memories of Reena every time we look at him, and he has done the impossible by taking away all the pain from her death.
I am so glad we bought another dog.

I am so sorry to hear about your Reena.

What a pretty name for a sheltie.

It sounds like you are enjoying Toby. I can't wait to hear more stories about him.

Welcome to the forum
Sorry to hear about Reena, but she must have been a great dog!
Very nice that you have room in your hearts for Toby, got to love Shelties and their big hearts!

I'm sorry to hear about Reena. I found that nothing helps to ease the pain of the loss of a beloved pet more than expanding your heart and letting a new one in. I'm glad that you have Toby to love.

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your girl Reena.

Our shelties don't want our hearts to shatter when they cross the rainbow bridge...but perhaps in breaking a bit our hearts can open up to allow more in.

I'm glad that you are continuing the love with Toby and Brandy.

I have read somewhere that once dog passes to Rainbow bridge they take away part of our heart. Once new dog comes into our life they give us part of their heart. If we lucky enough, by the time we die, we will have a "doggy" heart, full of generosity and unconditional love that dogs bring us...
