Refusing to eat

That sounds like a good report, Melissa. I wonder if she's just tired of her food. I've had Shelties that will, after a while, start turning up their nose at what they've eaten and loved forever. Maybe try a different one and see what happens? I know Sadie has stomach issues so that complicates it, but there are more choices now in foods of that type.

I'm happy to hear that it doesn't appear to be anything serious that the vet noticed. Hopefully in a couple days she'll be back to her normal self.

She mentioned a disease that can make it difficult for them to open their mouths, but she has no problem doing that and let out a rather big yawn at the vets just to prove it.

This made me smile--good girl, Sadie!

While I was glad that she didn't see anything, I'm a bit frustrated too. I still think there is something going on with Sadie.

I may buy a small bag of a different flavor of wellness and she how she does.

Glad to hear she couldn't find anything wrong. I don't know how it is in Canada, but it is soooo hot here. HOW HOT? Reallly hot, and the humidity is the pits.

Lady has cut back on her eating, even if she is in the air conditioning. My two like to eat late at night, with this heat. Of course in the other three seasons they eat their regular amount. They go out, do their business, and want to come in. We play in the house, I just don't have the heart to run them outside for any kind of game. I know the weather has always determined what they feel like eating.

Its been warm here too, but they're in the house most of the time where its cool.

I'm still worried about her, she was VERY quiet today and refused to eat unless I put water in her food.

I am worried too. Dogs should eat and if they don't, then something is wrong (my opinion).

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I have heard people on here say that dogs won't starve themselves to death. Smudge says otherwise. He ate about 1/4 a cup of food a day for over a month. I had to beg and plead with him to get him to eat it. On top of not eating he was throwing up. He had nothing on his stomach to throw up, and the acid in his stomach began to eat away at blood vessels causing him to throw up blood.

We never did find out what was wrong, and I seriously tried almost every dog food you could think of - both dry and canned.

My vet said it could be stress. They ended up giving Smudge a bunch of medicine for throwing up that didn't do squat, and I was left trying to figure out what to do on my own. Smudge ued to never be a picky eater.

If you do figure out what is wrong then let me know, because what was wrong with Smudge is still a mystery. We go back to the vet early July, but it is for a rabies shot and a microchip.

This is a shot in the dark, Melissa, but have you thought about Lyme? Perhaps your vet should do a test. They do go off their food, and are quiet and not themselves. We have Barkley on what seems to be his yearly round of Doxycyclene for it and this time he is just not bouncing back quickly so we will be back at the vet. Lyme can do all sorts of things to them and I know you're in Canada but if it's warm there, you probably have ticks. Just a thought.

Lyme isn't really a problem in our area. We don't really get deer ticks here, if at all. Its mainly just dog ticks. We've hardly been anywhere with ticks this year, due to my health and the weather. Sadie also isn't showing any signs of lameness.

Sunday she was acting like her old self, although still turning her nose up at her food. It was a very hot, humid day and she had a ball playing in the yard with Ginny and biting the water coming out of the hose when we cleaned our patio furniture. Not sure what's up with her at all.

We've had a very stressful couple of weeks and were taking it easy on Saturday, so I suppose our calm, quiet behavior could have been influencing her behavior and she may have been feeling fine. Sadie's great that way.

I'm planning on picking up a sample of Wellness in a different flavor to see how she reacts to it. If it does turn out that she's becoming picky, I'm uncertain as to how I'm going to handle it. I've been a firm believer about not catering to finicky eating. I suppose rotating flavors of the same food occasionally couldn't hurt, but I still have to think about it...

I am the same way, firm on not having picky eaters.

I am going to say this and I don't want to scare you, but Cleveland showed no other signs of sickness, only some days off and some days on food. Watch her weight carefully. I would do a journal and weigh her weekly. If that weight drops investigate further.

In January of 2009, Cleveland was 23 lbs and was becoming what I thought finicky. By July the same, he was 17lbs (that 25% weight loss apr.) and we lost him to stomach cancer.

My vet said and I believe her, dogs will not starve themselves over being picky. Their will to survive is stronger than picky~ness.

I know you are conscientious, just please be careful, as I know you will.

Keep us posted and my thoughts are with you.
