Today marks one year that we helped Cody cross the bridge. Words cannot describe how much we miss our sweet boy. Our hearts still hurt for him, and I am now sure that it always will. Cody came to us as a "Free to a good home" ad in our local newspaper. When we decided that we wanted to adopt/rescue a Sheltie, we went to the local Sheltie rescue and were rudely rejected as "unfit" to be Sheltie parents, as we had not had a dog in a very long time. We were so disappointed! One day at work, I just decided to pick up the classified ads to look at the dog ads. And there he was, "5 year old Shetland Sheepdog, free to a good home..." I was stunned! Went to my wife's desk, showed her the ad, called the owner, took a early lunch, and headed off to meet this Sheltie and his family. Cody hid under the kitchen table and watched us as we talked to the owners. They had another small dog, a toddler, and another child on the way. They did not feel that they could give enough attention to two dogs, and because Cody required a lot of care, they would rehome him. While we were talking, Cody worked his way over to us and I reached out to him. When I tried to scratch behind his ears, he spun around and pushed his rear end against my hand! "He likes to have his butt scratched" When I scratched his rear end the look on his face sealed the deal. That day Cody went from the odd man out, to a family that gave him all the love and attention a dog could ever want. He fell right in with us, and paid us back a thousand times over with all his love, loyalty, and Sheltie silliness. A day never went by that he did not make us smile. He had a way about him, everyone fell in love with Cody. He totally changed the way I looked at dogs, and made us Sheltie lovers forever. He was our heart dog. After he passed, we were not sure we could go through that pain again. Then my wife had a dream about a tri-colored boy that wold be named Zulu...
