Remote control ball thrower

That's a very cool idea but in our house we still haven't mastered bringing the balls back so it just means that the 'remote fetcher'(ME) would have an armload of balls to retrieve!

I think there would be a good possibility that an Auto. ball thrower would KILL Sadie.

She' is EXTREMELY ball motivated and won't stop unless you stop throwing the ball for her. If she had a machine that kept throwing the ball, she'd probably feel compelled to chase the ball till she died from exhaustion.

Really great idea though!

My friend has one -- her Shelties adore it!!! And yes, it has to be turned on judiciously -- Sheltie Ball Exhaustion Symdrome is a distinct possibility. :uhoh:

Sounds like a toy that would have to be plugged into a timer to save the shelties from exhaustion :biggrin2:

I think, it's funny if you want to teach it as a trick, but such ball games are poison for the bones, because the stop they make when they take the ball or the jump they do when they catch it in the air strains the hinges more than every day Agility.
In the house, where the dogs only trot for the ball, it's ok and the ball catching in (correct) Flyball is ok too, 'cause they do a 'swimmer turn' on the ball machine, but I would never use a device like this, cause I don't want a 7year old Sheltie with arthrosis...
It's better to cache a toy (can also be just a ball...!) and let them seek. If it's not too difficult for the first times, they learn very fast, that they get a game for bringing it back and later you can sit and wait just like using a remote ball thrower. (And the dogs get tired very fast too. :biggrin2:)

I'm sorry, if it sounds too hard, but I've seen so much young-old 'ball dogs', that I have to write this. :(

So did you notice if the remote is infra red or radio? I could see an internet ball thrower. Sign onto the cam.... hit a dinger.... press launch (password restricted of course)

That thing is neat. My brother has a Golden that loves to fetch tennis balls. One day while playing with his potato gun we came up with the idea of making a tennis ball gun. We built one out of PVC pipe that would throw a tennis ball about 150yds... Well the dog loved the "long distance" ball thrower. He would see my brother pull that thing out and run over sit at his side waiting for the boom and launch. Chase loves fetching them too but I think half the appeal for him is the praise he gets when he returns them to the thrower.

I bought it 4 months ago. I have only taken it out two times. The arm that throws the ball is quite powerful!! I was all stressed out that one of the dogs would get hit in face!! I think my stress got to the dogs and they just got too overly excited. A am a super cautious protective person, so Its not so much that the game is not good for the dogs, but not good for me. Maybe I will try it out again next Spring.
