To measure for a martingale....
Take a regular collar and fit it snug around the neck with just enough slack to be able to fit a finger through. This how you want the collar to fit without choking when attached to a leash, and without slipping the collar.
Remove the collar and measure the length. That is the length that you want the leather part of the martingale to be. The leather ends of the martingale will be attached to about about 2 inches of fine chain, with three links.
The bottom link is where you attach the lead. When the dog pulls on the lead, the chain tightens to the same diameter that you measured above - no more.
And when the collar is not attached to a lead, it will hang comfortably around his neck without matting.
(Do check the rings from time to time. I've occasionally had fur snag on them, but rarely).
If you are going to go with a martingale that is non-adjustable (like mine) you do need to wait until the pup is mostly grown out (neck, not fur). And be watchful of weight loss and gain. Bacca lost weight when he got ill, so his collar is just a little too loose. Fortunately, he's not a puller anymore so I don't worry about slipping his collar.
And the beauty of these collars is they are so fine, that they mostly disappear in their ruff. Most times, you can't even tell they are wearing a collar at all. The braid is only about 1/4" thick. And they are very soft and flexible.
