Rolled Leather Martingale Collar?

I also use a nylon martingale collar. Shelby will slip out of a fixed collar. She only wears it when we go out for a walk. I have her rabies, ID, and CGC tags attached to the collar. She is also chipped.

When we go camping she must remained tied when outside. When being tied I use a harness for her. I am afraid that she will forget she is tied and attempt to run after something. I don't want her to injure her neck. Her harness only has her ID tag. I don't care for the harness because her body is very long and I can't seem to get it too fit correctly behind her front legs. If I go to the next size it is too big.

From what I understand for puppies a flat collar is ok? And martingale is the way to go for shelties? And yes I plan on crate training my puppy. I have found someone that does Kangaroo collars and already posted the link, you can add on...don't know what it's called but..the martingale chain part thingy :confused2: So, here is my plan (I like to plan things out way ahead of time :razz: )

Then just keep getting a larger size...with the occasional Halloween and Christmas ones :rolleyes2: and then......

Thanks for sharing this link! I've been googling trying to find a replacement for Leashes by Design. I think you found it.

I think you have a good plan. Plain martingales until they grow up, then invest in a good quality collar. p.s. The kangaroo collars will stretch over time, so consider ordering a size down. (e.g. 1/2 inch)

Taking it off at home does sound good. A question on the martingales, how do you attach tags to it? There doesn't seem to be a ring for them. :confused2:

This is just a place I've come across on the forum one time, I read how everyone loves Leashes by Design, I do not know of the quality of Hi Tide Creations, won't know till some one tries. So I'm not sure I would can it a "replacement" just yet. From their website they look pretty good though
 
It might sound complicated, but I have two sets of collars. Martingale with their names and my phone number embroidered on them remain attached to their leashes. They only wear these on walks or when I take them out front on leash.

Then a regular buckle collar with their tags. They wear these when we go on walks, in the car or when we are out of town.

Can you explain why two sets of collars?

I think it would be helpful, since it appears that there are several rules of thumb that various members use when it comes to collars

1) I use martingales 24 x7. I use martingales for a number of reasons
- when attached to a lead, its difficult for them to slip their lead
- when not attached to a lead, it lies loose and does not matt the fur
- when not attached to a lead, if one of my dogs does a Houdini, I worry less about them catching themselves on a branch and strangling themselves.
- you can attach tags to martingales.

2) Some members never use collars inside, particularly if the dogs are crated. Personally, I think martingales reduce the risk of strangulation because the collar would have to be caught in specifically in the central chain link. What are the chances of that?

3) Some member swear against martingales altogether, though I have to admit that I never understood why.

Sure!

I like martingales for many of the reasons that you noted. One of my dogs is reactive on walks, and it is the only thing I can trust that he can't back out of. My other dog is a bit skittish, and though nothing has happened yet, if she were ever truly scared I believe she might try to back out of a normal collar and run.

But, I don't leave collars on my dogs 24/7 for numerous reasons.
1) I would hate for them to get stuck on anything when I'm gone (they are sometimes still crated).
2) It mats/breaks their fur.
3) They are never left in the yard unattended.

But, there are times when I think the slight risk of the collar getting caught on something while I am gone is outweighed by the chance of them running away in an unfamiliar situation and needing to have ID and tags on. Examples in which this logic applies:
1) In the car (I believe the chance of them running away if we were in an accident outweighs the chance that their collar would get caught and choke them before I could save them).
2) When traveling (same as above).

But, if the collar is going to get stuck (and I agree that it's a small chance, but I still do what I can to prevent it in most scenarios), then I'd rather it be a regular buckle collar that is fairly loose around their necks than a martingale that I have purposefully made as tight as is comfortable but that they can't get out of.
 
Ummm...how do you attach a tag to a martingale. Ones I've seen don't have a ring for them :confused2:
