This is really funny to me as I have had two Shelties - one female - when I was a kid - and now one male. Neither ever rolled in anything even remotely dirty much less stinky.
I often joke to people how much my male Sheltie is truly his mommy's boy because when we go for a walk, he actually runs AROUND puddles so he doesn't get his little paws wet or dirty - so I know for sure he would have none of rolling in anything stinky!
I actually started to think this was part of the Sheltie nature - to be adverse to getting dirty to keep their beautiful selves clean - clearly I am sorely mistaken!
I hope you have some good shampoo! No matter, though, right, we love 'em stinky or not for sure!

It's Sheltie Perfume!
When I was a kid, I learned about this from reading the Albert Payson Terhune books. Apparently, many dogs think rotting stuff is the most excellent perfume around. They luxuriously rub their shoulders in it, first one, then the other, and follow up with a good roll. Mmmmmmm...Eau de Deer Poop, my favorite!

From what I read, one theory is that it masks their normal smell so prey animals have a harder time picking up their scent.

We always called it the "head slide". We named it that because they seem to go in head first then slide the scent down the rest of the body. For whatever reason some dogs are really into the scent thing. Luckily none of my shelties have been inclined to do this. However, the little doxie that I babysit, on occasion, will do it. Not only does she always get her pedicure when she comes to visit, she sometimes gets a bath.

YES - it is a head slide!
Wonder if Tully is trying to hide herself in the scent - given she is still slightly timid, but then she likes to mark everything when walking with Deska. When we go to the pet shop she rubs herself against all the bags of food - now that would hardly turn off any predators, although it probably makes her very popular!

Most definitely, the head slide!
I had two cats - both died over 6 or 7 years ago. One of the cats loved to pee on the Oriental rug that I had in my living room. I had it professionally cleaned, but somehow it still maintained the smell, so the cat kept going back. I finally had it cleaned again but moved it down into the basement, still rolled up and promptly forgot all it.....
Until "the move". I'm slowly going through stuff and come across the rug. I decide to haul it over to the new house and spread it out. I'm thinking to myself: It's been sitting there for about 6 years, clean and unused. It couldn't possibly still have the smell.
I bring the boys over to the new house, and the first thing Indy does is the "headslide" exactly on the spot where the cat used to pee. Can their sense of smell really be so strong?
