Rushing Foundations

We decided to go to semi-private lessons for our foundation work. The group class was good, but it didn't allow us to work on the foundations that our individual dog needs. Our classes are also with other Shelties. It makes a difference in how you train based on the instincts and personalities of the different breeds.

Now you have to pass a "test" to move to the next class. .

I agree--that's a great idea. I wish our club did this. Being instructors, it can be difficult even for us because people assume they can just move up when they "complete" a class, but really they aren't ready for some of the more advanced exercises because they skimped on foundation training.

I think some clubs not all of them take students and make them instructors and I see their students struggling in the ring.

My husband and I talk about this a lot...at any other facility we would probably not qualify as teachers because we've only been participating for a few years. However, in our club, we're the best we have available. I also like to think that I'm a better teacher than student

If I was just doing agility and had no intention of competing then I would definetly take a class with someone in my club. But I am not.Shadow is a very talented dog as is Sting. At one time Shadow was a Rush and he was one of the top dogs to beat here in the 16 inch class. He has beaten the best including Rush and beaten by the best.He has qualified for world team tryouts every year.I would still put him up against some of these talented 16 inch dogs.JMO but I need for my dogs someone who can really teach be it foundations or other aspects of training.I am compeitive so I need this.

I definitely understand that. We are at that point now, so I am glad that we are moving. As it is now, there are no competitive trainers within a 4 hour driving distance, so it will be good to move where we can get the training we're looking for.

Well, you will have some very talented trainers in Ohio say Linda Mecklinburg and the Cranks and I bet it will be a whole new level of training for you.Best of luck to you there.
