Sand can cause issues...

I found this post and was shocked that sand on a ball could cause an obstruction!

We took dolly to the beach on the weekend and were playing fetch with her ball.
It wasn’t until later on that day we realised something was wrong.
She was clearly uncomfortable, grouchy and couldn’t keep anything down. We decided to take her to the out of hours vets where we were staying. Luckily we did as she had sand impacted in her intestines as you can see in the X-ray she was completely blocked up. We were told she’d most likely need an operation and a long recovery and the chance of sepsis etc.. however we were lucky after 2 nights in the vets and lots of TLC she was discharged. This happened because every time she collected the ball residue of sand was ingested. We never thought something like this could happen and wanted to make people aware to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

I do know from personal experience that sand can cause issues, but it does take a lot of sand. I saw this post as well and while it's a good reminder, as well as the one going round about dogs drinking too much water, I do think there's a bit over 'drama' in it as well. The water one took me by surprise because I was going to order a step on water fountain for Brodie since he's nuts about the hose, but figured I wouldn't just to be safe.

Our first doxie had a fondness for sand. We never allowed him out off leash with the kids (he liked to slide down their slide) if they were playing in the sand box we made for them. We had a cover made with grommets specifically because of Buddy eating sand. MIL visiting, gave all the rules, look out the window to see Buddy, off leash, in the box, eating sand. He knew he was going to get in trouble so as I was running towards him, he was gulping it down. He ended up completely impacted.... 5 days trying to do everything for him, IVs during the day, at home with me at night, one vet wanted to go the surgical route but the head vet who was totally a surgical solution guy, said Buddy probably wouldn't live through the whole procedure and if he did, he'd have a whopping number of issues. Thank heavens that like Shelties, doxies will eat just about anything! 2 more days of IVs along with 2 large tubes of cat hairball remedy and it began to move! He was on antibiotics for some time after because they figure the sand probably did a number the whole way out. He lived a long life after that and never again was allowed near sand!

Yikes! I’m thankful no sand here!
