I think there's something called the "really reliable recall". Basically, its a recall that you use only in case of emergencies (dog running into street with traffic, etc). But obviously, it has to be proofed. lol.
I think you just need to work on your recall/stay or whatever you had yelled at SS. He didn't respond and was over his threshold.
Don't beat yourself up. Koji went running out of my apt barking, growling, all fierce looking. By the time I caught up to him, the couple was petting him and his tail was wagging. His tail never wags. So embarrassing. It happens to all of us. Even perfect Miko will start wandering off towards people and ignore me. Granted, he may not hear me, but still. He never used to do that.
Just keep training and proofing. Its all you can do.

My mom had words with me a little while ago because I escaped the yard. I tried to tell her that I didn't go far, but she was still pretty mad. She called me a dumb a** and told me to get my butt home NOW!
She did give me a treat though after she stopped yelling. She said I was a good boy for coming.

We have damdeers. They are The Enemy. I think they are the same as regular deers. I chase them so they will not eat my chickens. Come visit and we will chase damdeers.

In all seriousness,I have read this thread,and have enjoyed the commentary..but there is an issue of recall,and lack of it.
I always prided myself on having a reliable recall on the boys,especially Trapp,but I have learned some valuable lessons while training with him this past month or so in rally/Ob.
Recall is numero..uno important. When your dogs blows you off,and does not come when called,and using only a 2 syllable phrase,it is time to re-think & re-train.
I got blown off by Trapp one day at training,and Tom looked at me and said...he's blowing you off. What & how are you going to handle this? So I was faced with what to do...
Of course my first instinct was to go where he was (WRONG ANSWER)~ And I was stopped in my tracks by Tom.
He instructed me,to call to him again,using only "come here" & do it with authority.
Again ignored... so what to do...
Well this is what I did. I did go to him,I was'nt spewing under my breath,I was'nt jabbering about how bad he was. Believe me,when he saw me walking to him,he knew he was in deep do-do..
If he had continued to walk away from me,I probably would have used some choice words under my breath,but he stood still.
I stood over him,reached down,and took him by his ruff,not hard..but firm enough,to let him know I mean buisness. I looked at him square in his eyes,and put a short lead on him,and I led him back to where my original stance was.
The rest of the training went without one moment of ignorance & blowing me off,no matter how far he was out from me. And it was a 2 acre lot,all fenced but his lack of recall was defineately lacking,and it was a wake up call to me.
Now you can certainly take this scenario,and do or not do,but in the end..it's the dogs safety that could be in question. It does'nt matter if its a dead end road,things happen.
And with neighbors that don't take kindly to barking dogs, a recall is important to get your dog back where he belongs.
It's either that,or don't let him have the priviledge of being loose.

I agree that shreaking like a Banshee at your dog is no solution for reliable recall. I've done it and failed, of course!
And I'm not even for a minute going to give advice as to what is the right way, because both my dogs recall's are only at about the 80% level.
We all got caught up in the story and foregot the most important message...and yes, reliable recall is no. 1!!! Safety is everything. Thanks for the slap on the side of head!

The situation Karen had could happen to all of us. It's great we're learning from this and have a laugh, too
I recommend this video, because it has many great tips in it, and is full of common sense! One of the MAIN ones in my opinion is that we often lose our dogs again who have a recall, by making them COME and immediately follow this with an obedience command, too soon and some learn that is not fun, so the value for the recall has gone down the drain, if the obedience command isn't a high valued one (yet)... The second most important thing is that if you are unsure whether the dog comes THEN DON'T call at all... rather step on the lunge line so that they don't learn they can ignore you and get away with it.
The more a dog gets to practice a behaviour the harder it will be to un-train it..
Now depending on where you are in your training, I think this is a great idea how to use your lunge line and do some training with and have fun at the same time, yet still feel safe that you're going to get an even greater recall. The lunge line is not used to 'reel the dog in' but just to gently get the attention.

A very good video,and using a lunge line is extremely helpful when working the dog to learn this behavior.
