Sandstorm was bad-on walk with husband

Ear pinch force breaking was my undoing a VERY long time ago (say, around 1996 or so). My trainer when Neechee was actively trialling was an old-school obedience trainer who recommended this method with Neechee because he every so often (like 1 or 2 out of 25 times) would refuse a retrieve. I was training for Open A at the time and was told that retrieving MUST be enforced. The first time we tried it was the last. I dug my fingernail in as instructed, Neechee yelped, and I vomited into the bushes. The trainer then tried it. Same result. It ruined my dog - after that, he would no longer play retrieving games or much of anything else. I was heartbroken and miserable that my ignorance had caused me to hurt my dog and damaged his faith in me. We worked through it, but it was hard.

omg what a sin to had to throw up and ruin your relationship with your dog!
I know I used to not understand the leash corrections after you trained your dog to be SO focused on tracking, then pop collar corrections when he was going too far ahead of the track... way back when I dabbled in Schutzhund with old school trainers. Same with encouraging and making the dog have a good, solid bite and then CORRECT it when he won't let go when ya tell him to out... I stopped training because it just was breaking my heart, this stuff is SO unnecessary!
However, as I said leash corrections would come in handy with a hubby, cuz HIM you could tell what he was punished for, LOL

No it isn't, it was your patience and perseverance and common sense that helped you, along with the positive enforcement you gave and the relationship you building and not any collar popping or rib kicking, errr sorry your dog whisperer calls it touching...
.

Yes, it was perseverance, common sense and positive enforcement that helped and still does. I give credit to this forum for that too. But seriously it WAS a dog whisperer show that demonstrated how to walk a herding breed (forget what breed) on a somewhat busy road. CM demonstrated the sit when car goes by, have a relaxed and calm presence, and keep silent; and do it over and over again, which I did. It worked! There are two shows I have seen with herding breeds-this one and another one with a sheltie. There was no touching or leash popping in those shows- they were definately geared toward those breeds.
I will have to buy the video and send it to you! :biggrin2: Then I would have to pay you to watch them!

lol, SS you little devil.. can't you just see the driver slowing down to comment

Thing is, dogs don't generalize ... Your hubby has to go through training boot camp as well, lol

So true. On the whole, for a dog to generalise a new behaviour or over-ride instinctive behaviour he needs to be trained in a variety of situations so he understands that is how he is expected to behave with everyone or at all places. One thing we stress at the obedience club is the only way to ensure consistent behaviour is consistent training with the whole family.

I have been told that my Danny Boy has acknowledged my husband as alpha, then Danny has put himself second and I am the last one. So he thinks he rules me. Also my husband is no nonsense very confident guy. Danny just follows his lead and listens to him. Me I have to bribe Dannny with treats.

I think Karen is going to have to give you lessons as well as her hubby. Danny Boy acts differently with you because you act differently with him.

Definitely, the pinch collar was for the hubs. After a horrible experience, I refuse to use either a pinch collar or ear-pinch forced retrieve on any dog. Hey, maybe the ear pinch would work on hubs!

I know this method is still used with retriever training and I can't believe there isn't a positive method that could be used to get better results. They pinch the ear so the dog opens its mouth, surely offering a treat would do just as well at getting them to open their mouth.

I definately agree that consistency must be mastered by husband and myself, and dh knows this. We need to schedule an on the road walk- I can demonstrate, then he can walk the dog. Positive reinforcement for him too!! Should I treat hubby also?
Okay, I meant a food treat!!!!
