This is the same problem I have with hubs. He will NOT listen. The whole boxer screw-up at the dog park was due to his not using good handling methods!

I have a very old pinch collar in the bottom of my tack box that I could easily fit to him. Wonder if that would work?

This didn't happen with The Jerk (a/k/a old hub), as he trained and showed his dogs right along with me and mine. New hubs has never even been to a dog show or obedience trial. That's gonna have to change speedily.

Consistent handling is the key to a well-behaved dog!!!! And as far as the whole alpha dog thing is concerned, people always outnumber the dog. As long as they are confident of their place (no matter what pack number they are) they are happy dogs.

We need a thread on how to train the non-handler co-habitation partner!

I assume we can use the ole pinch collar on the new partner, not the dog! lolll
We should have such a thread, I am also dating a non dog guy at the moment, lol. I wouldn't even bother letting him take Toffee!

My husband has to be corrected, and as I said, I tell him to put his listening ears on. Walking a dog? He takes Lucky and gives him to much leash. Then I take the leash from him, and show him how to tighten it up (he knows) otherwise it goes in one ear out the other.

The DH and shelties are pathetic messes together.

Definitely, the pinch collar was for the hubs. After a horrible experience, I refuse to use either a pinch collar or ear-pinch forced retrieve on any dog. Hey, maybe the ear pinch would work on hubs!

woah, never heard of an ear pinch training method, but hey I would try it on my date! I will let ya know what he thinks of the method when I need him to retrieve my wine from the fridge

Having studied a certain dog whisperers methods and years of punitive training the old ways then resulted in messing up my dog's relationship with me unnecessarily! I am now the crazy Lady on the soapbox about positive enforcement teachings! However, this switch has not yet progressed to human counterparts, I still believe in physical corrections for SO's when needed LOLLLLL

The Colonel is right....me and Bacca are bad sometimes with son, Ryan and sometimes with Mom's BF, David. We know it, but its so easy, so we do it anyway.

Mom always tells them that they have to be the boss of us! But we thinks she hasn't taught them how to do it yet.

It's pretty simple. Love us when we gud! When we bad, make us work for hugs!

Mom is finally teaching me that chasing dogs and people on the fence is bad. Now, I come when she calls me and I get tons of loving.

She's teaching the son, Ryan, to also give treats to get me to behave nice. We think he's starting to get it too! Treats = good dogs!

Ear pinch force breaking was my undoing a VERY long time ago (say, around 1996 or so). My trainer when Neechee was actively trialling was an old-school obedience trainer who recommended this method with Neechee because he every so often (like 1 or 2 out of 25 times) would refuse a retrieve. I was training for Open A at the time and was told that retrieving MUST be enforced. The first time we tried it was the last. I dug my fingernail in as instructed, Neechee yelped, and I vomited into the bushes. The trainer then tried it. Same result. It ruined my dog - after that, he would no longer play retrieving games or much of anything else. I was heartbroken and miserable that my ignorance had caused me to hurt my dog and damaged his faith in me. We worked through it, but it was hard.

No it isn't, it was your patience and perseverance and common sense that helped you, along with the positive enforcement you gave and the relationship you building and not any collar popping or rib kicking, errr sorry your dog whisperer calls it touching...
