Sarah's cough

My sweet baby girl is 6 years old this past June.
For the last couple of days she's been acting like she wants to hack something up, but that's only after she's been outside in the sun, which irritates her.
We're thinking that it might be hair as she is always grooming herself (she's so vane), she does think she's royalty.
Thing is, I just bought a house outside city limits and kinda broke at this time.
If anyone has any advise, that would be appriciated.

Welcome, Tamara to you and your sheltie girl!

My advice would be to see a vet. Also, if you have a smartphone, take a video of her when she is coughing to show the vet.

My senior sheltie that recently passed had canine bronchitis. He was on medication for it over two years. It could not be cured but managed with medication.
Not sure what your little one's issue might be but it might help if you sought the help and guidance of a vet.

My boy coughed so hard that his lungs actually showed scaring...

Kennel cough might also be a possible issue... not sure if she has been around a lot of dogs... that is usually where they can catch it.

Only a vet can test for you... please see one before it gets worse!

So many things it could be, including heartworm if that's in your area and you're not treating for it. I really don't think it's because she is licking her fur; unless she's pulling hair out by the chunks dogs don't really get hairballs and cough them up like cats. It's unusual enough that I do think you should see your vet, it's best to check these things out right away instead of wait and hope it goes away; if it gets worse it may get more expensive to treat. Good luck, I hope it's nothing serious.

Brooke gets a cough every year about this time that's due to allergies.

Could she have kennel cough? Initially it sounds like they have to hack something up. When Piper had it a year ago I used a vaporizer and mixed honey and lemon juice (used a syringe to squirt it in his mouth, didn't like the taste). You can also give cough syrup but off the top of my head I don't recall the type (I got the info from our vet). If it is kennel cough the cough will sound like a goose honking (with Piper it initially sounded like he was gagging).
