Sca flyball update

Well he is still struggling with the concept getting something that is not moving but tonight....

He started the evening playing and then proceeded to demonstrate that yes he CAN get worse on his stays :o We're talking a dog that is poor went to zero :o

After the embarrassement though he did do OK with going around the cone. But all night he was distracted by ANYTHING.

When we got to the jumps and box I was not to hopeful given his night so far. But was hoping for a tiny glimmer of success on getting the ball since we had been practicing and i got him some new balls. Well, he never brought it all the way back but did do all the jumps then picking the ball off the box and coming back. Always one jump short of bringing it back all the way though :lol:

set it up like a course in the Dow memorial park- add one more jump than there usually is for flyball and maybe he'll do all the jumps at the practice :winkgrin:
 
I was going to but jumps are his thing. Now going to get the ball :o and the warm ups where he has to stay :rolleyes2: He does well on anything that means moving. Though once he has run he is terrible and wants to chase everyone else, we had to move as he was freaking Bunny out last night. He has improved but I might have to put him in super obedience training so he is such a wildman (we play a LOT)
 
I don't reward unless the ball is brought to me - this goes for fetching or flyball. I also practice the jumps separately sometimes (chuck the ball past the jumps like fetch, but tell Duncan to get 'in' the jumps - he actually does it and is really good and it and it teaches that INSIDE the jumps is where he wants to be). Fortunately, Duncan has only dropped the ball early once or twice. Ignoring him or no food treat was enough to fix that in a hurry.

But mostly we just have fun!
 
Sca was doing good again tonight. He was going around the cone on command. Trigger the box and everything. Still not 100% on bringing the ball far enough but better on that even. Well until we went out to 4 jumps and he tried to cheat by going around on the return trip. Next time there was plexiglass guards and he ran into one. Gave the instructor a look like "WHAT was that for" didn't do a decent run from then on :lol: He did run the jumps, trigger the box and come all the way back (almost with the ball) once though. There is hope for him :yes: though racing season starts next weekend....
 
Training can be boring and distracting - my two can be very wicked in class sometimes, esp Deska who likes to be the class clown. I wouldnt worry too much, they know when they are competing that its work time and they do get better focus. Although it does take a couple of comps before they work that out - if you dont start competing with getting red carded then you just aren't doing it right!

Do you have a flyball harnesss? It is amazing how well focused the dogs are when they have their harness on, its like their work uniform. Last month I've been training some green dogs and taking Tully along to work on her turns. She was being a real pain and prefered to play fetch than to do proper turns to get a boring stationary ball. Then one of the other instructors pointed out she hasn't been wearing her harness at these classes and sure enough when we did the next classes with the harness on she had more focus.
 
Just a regular harness. One of his biggest problems was hit perfect by the instructor, Sca loves to play. So anytime there is a new dog he feels it is his duty to go visit and see if they are up to playing. Last week 2 new dogs and zero stay. This week the plexiglass hurt his feelings (for a wild man he can be pretty sensitive) and then before he regained focus a new dog appeared. That was the end :rolleyes2:

Oh and racing season is for me not him :biggrin2: I'll likely skip this one so he has all of February as 100% Sca time still
