Poor Missy has developed a scabby skin funk on her back right over her hips. I noticed some scabs last Saturday, gave her a bath with Earthbath tea tree oil and aloe vera shampoo to give her some itch relief. Then to be perfectly honest, I forgot about it. I never noticed it again when petting her or saw her biting at it. Then this last Sunday, I was petting her waiting to go to the venue we were doing flyball at, and it was terrible. A much larger area of scabby grossness. It was just flaky and scabby, nothing screamed "infection" to me. I asked a vet who was participating with her dogs to look at it and she said it looked like a hotspot that Missy had been biting at. Sunday night I sprayed some earthbath tea tree oil and aloe vera spray (it comes in a spray too) and used a flea comb to brush out the loose flakes (didn't mess with scabs though. It seemed to clear up a little, but not much.

I took her to the vet yesterday (Monday was too busy at work for me to take off). The vet said it looked like an allergy of some sort, maybe a reaction to a bug bite. She's on Trifexis year round so who knows. I'm glad to see it's got 5/5 stars, but I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do to give her some relief. Again, I've never seen her biting at it. I'm such a newb at owning a dog, when it's new stuff like this I'm stumped. I also stopped by a natural pet store and got some hydrocortisone spray. I felt I owed it to poor Missy to let her go visit one of her favorite pet stores after I made her go to the vet. She always gets lots of treats and loving there. The girl at the pet store also mentioned using coconut oil, but recommended I go get it from a grocery store because I would pay 2x as much at their store (I appreciate honesty lol).

Any recommendations? Am I forgetting something? Do I need to wash any bedding? Vet said if it's still there after 2 weeks, come back.
 
So any time that a dog has a recurring skin funk in the same place, I want it scraped and send in for a culture and sensitivity. Every single time something like that has happened around here (in my landlords dogs), it's staph. Not a single dog in this house has ever had a hot spot, or an allergy that looked like that.

I just inherited an old lady dog with literally no thyroid on the bloodwork, and I've cleared up her skin funk in two baths. I have a dog that is allergic to flea bites (probably any insect bites), and they look like giant angry zits. Can't do anything about those but keep them clean and dry.
 
One cup distilled water, 1/2 cup apple cider vineger, 1/2 cup steeped green tea as a rinse after the bath. It can be left on.
 
When Honey had something like that it was because of a bug bite, but by than it had developed into a staph infection as well. Keep an eye on your pups stomach, just to be sure.

We use Vector for repelling fleas because she has such a problem with bites even if they aren't staying on her.

The vet gave us antibiotics and the first one said we could give her benedryl to help with the itching. It didn't seem to work to well. We have a medicated brand of the that same shampoo from another vet, who also put her on antibiotics and gave us steriods and a lotion for her instead.

That finally cleared it up. the lotion is called resiSOOTHE and it does seem to work really well, and it's easier to get on Honey than the sprays I picked up were.
 
Missy's stomach is the first thing our vet friend looked at after checking her back. I gave her a bath with that shampoo yesterday and it seems to be clearing up nicely. There are a couple small sores that are still there. I still haven't noticed her biting or scratching at it. She must be doing it when I'm not looking!

She was very upset with me yesterday because I gave her a bath almost immediately after getting home from work. And the day before that I took her to the vet, which she hates. She's such a good sport though. At the vet she just rested her head on the tech's arm while the vet examined her. She's never put up a fight, but she shakes so you know she's nervous. Bath time I know she doesn't like because she tries to hide, but she tolerates it. She got lots of treats!
