You do not mention if you went to the veterinarian or not. (At least I didn't see it.)
If you didn't , two thoughts that come to mind which you might investigate are that this might be a form of Lipfold pyoderma, and a scrape for demodex would not be a bad idea.

I just saw this. It ceratinly looks uncomfortable. I would see a vet just to be on the safe side. My motto is always better safe than sorry.
Surprisingly Mikos does not seem uncomfortable and it is not tender to touch but he does scratch occasionally. When it started to look better we decided to give it the weekend and see how things go but I think a trip to the vet will be in order this week. Thank you Dr. Mac and Justicemom for your advice, it is really appreciated.

The Results Are In
Mikos had his visit at the vet this afternoon and they are pretty certain that it was an allergic reaction to something. We took in the photos we have been taking each day so they could see the appearance prior to Benadryl. The vet says there is very little swelling today, no sign of infection, and no sign of a fungal infection (he looked with a black light). He gave Mikos a shot of an antihistamine that is stronger than Benadryl and says to keep an eye on it to make sure no infection starts but that it should heal up in 4-5 days. We are to go back in if it gets worse or doesn't heal. Glad that it is nothing serious! We decided to weigh Mikos since we were in the office and he weighs in at exactly 30.0 lbs which is OK for our 18" tall boy, right?

I would lean towards an allergy of some kind based on description alone. It's hard to say.
About 8 months ago, Indy developed a bald patch in his fur abouy the size of a quarter. It never got any bigger, but neither did it ever go away.
I know that many folk on the forum would recommend a supplement. I would go with your vet recommendation first.

That is really good news! So glad to hear it's nothing serious. One suggestion though, which someone else here mentioned early on. If you don't use stainless steel bowls for Miko's food and water, try changing to them. We've had two dogs that had lip reactions to plastic or ceramic and stainless cleared them up. It may not be the reason, but just in case....can't hurt!
