"Serving" Turkey Necks

I think the easiest meat to get would be chicken thighs, or full leg quarters. The skin is really easy to remove, and there is enough bone for newbie dogs.
 
I finally took the plunge and gave Phebe her first raw meal tonight. She was delighted with the chicken leg. For right now, I'm planning to give her 2 raw meals on the weekend, Saturday night and Sunday morning. My husband feeds her in the morning during the week before he leaves for work and he isn't on board with the whole raw thing. I think this is a good way to get the dental benefit for Phebe and still keep peace at home.

I removed the skin from the leg. I've found the easiest way to skin chicken pieces is to use a paper towel in the hand that you're using to pull off the skin. Much less slippery that way.

Give them time. Some dogs and cats that are not used to raw take a while to get used to it. Like I said, Maia is a finicky eater and many times the first few times she sees a 'new' meat she does not go for it with gusto. It was like that with meat with skin, fish (we're still working on raw fish, but she eats sardines and canned salmon and loves it now) etc. So just be patient. If they don't want it, take it away and bring it out the next meal etc. They will not starve no matter how they look at you with those pretty almond sheltie eyes!

Ember dislikes fish so much. No way no how is she eating it. She is better with the liver. Thanks to your tip I give it somewhat frozen and that did it for her. I guess it was a texture issue. She is like a chainsaw with everything else though. First time I gave her a turkey leg she grabbed the whole thing in her mouth and chomped down.:lol: I gave them a whole cornish game hen took 2 day to eat. Justice snapped off a leg then a wing, then a leg, and nibbled around the body. Diva did the same thing but was more aggressive with the body. Ember just grabs it and plows in. Whatever her mouth hit first was gone and she never changed direction either. I'm sure she would had eaten the whole thing had I not taken it a way for the next day. Pig. :lol:

Grizz was a raw raised pup. He has eaten it since he was weaned to 9 wks. He was on kibble from 9 wks to about 7 months before Rachel decided to go raw. He is the pickiest dog I have ever seen. He wouldn't eat at first nothing. We had to tease him with Diva to get him to eat. Diva would have gladly eaten his food. She wasn't on raw at the time. I think he is lazy about chewing myself. He likes boneless meats but bone in he picks at.

Margaret sounds like a good compromise with Phebe.
 
Che is picky with new meat too. He was on chicken necks and raw patties since 9 weeks and loves them but everything else remains to be seen, he will eat raw salmon/ had to freeze it for a month though/. Che would not eat raw liver but loves cooked one. We tried rabbit and somehow finished it.... today he got duck and no go, so I am "marinating" his duck necks with garlic and dry food "Stella's duck meal" which he loves and normally would get only for high value treats...
I guess it is very surprising that raw meat does not automatically means " oh yeah, great food" which just shows how far dogs removed from " natural wild like wolves life" :smile2: but we are working on it. Bad part since we buy only highest quality free range organic no added chemicals etc meat it gets quite expensive and seeing Che barely interested in it... yeah...
Local whole food store also had a deal on chicken legs so Che is more responsive to those ones, specially if I make enough slits in the meat/ skin.
Good news I also have cats who never " unlearned " their predator habits so raw meat is delicacy for them...

and to add to my insult, Sammy who is a rescue and is on kibble gobbles up any piece of meat I give her, and Che who was hand raised on raw meaty diet turns his face away from duck... waaa...

Toffee LOVES sardines, too, ANia.. but he is eating raw fish, but not as crazu about it, but as always I do the same as always.. I add some sardines and mash them up on top of the fish, lol

April loves sardines as well. I usually get the ones in mustard sauce, and, well, I don't get the full serving.

I'm floored that they can have raw turkey bones. I never realised it. But I guess it makes sense when you hear of foxes liking chicken coops, and such. All bones, or necks, legs? Is Chicken the same? Safe if raw? Assume so based on foxes reference above. Being single, turkey around home in it's raw state is a pretty rare event.

I think I remember the last one back in, gosh, it's gotta be '90, '91. I go to my sister's for events that call for turkey. :-) She does all the work. :biggrin2: Brother-in-law and I live in a state of confusion on those days. We constantly hear things like 'Well nobody's helping me with this....' followed more often than not as soon as we go to help by 'Get out of my kitchen...' But I digress...

Chelsea used to love beef bones, until she fractured one of her teeth on one. I found part of a tooth on the floor one time, and got her to the vet as soon as I could get her in. She didn't appear to be in any discomfort, so it didn't need pulled.

Ah, WRECK bones is what those are called. Any bone that supports significant weight is too hard to feed the dogs. That includes cattle, elk, some people include deer in that too. Small game bones are fine to feed raw; chicken, turkey, rabbit, fish, etc.

I have baby puppies here now, and I am trying to decide what to wean them to. Raw or kibble or both? Their mother is 100% raw fed.
