Seven-month old puppy still has diarrhea after for days on Flagyl (generic)

Usually, flagyl works within a few days to stem the tide, so to speak. But I have a puppy who seemed immune to it. She's the first dog I've ever had that flagyl didn't work on, and we tried several rounds. It could be that your pup is allergic to chicken, but if she's eaten it up till now without issues it could also be that she has a virus. My dogs have passed around a virus that involves diarrhea and soft stools for days. The only remedy I found that worked was ProPectalin which I got from Amazon. It's a combination of pectin and probiotics. You might try that. You can get it in a gel, which works faster, and also in chewable pill form. Here's a link: https://www.amazon.com/ProPectalin-...d=1473126411&sr=8-1&keywords=propectalin+dogs

Also, be sure to put your pup on a good probiotic to soothe her system. Good luck and as Cara said, be careful to keep her hydrated.

CUbby, he does not have giardia. As indicated above, stool sample negative for giardia and parasites. He did not have a bowel movement until two days after starting Flagyl, which I thought was a good thing. Saturday, his stools were liquids, then appeared to slightly firm up, like the consistency cottage cheese. Now they are like cow patties! :(

thank you, Ann! No question he is staying hydrated. He is drinking and I have also added fresh bland chicken broth to the rice and chicken mixture the last two days. Perhaps he is allergic to Flagyl. He is on the generic form, so perhaps that is the problem. Many times generics don't work as well. I would not rule out a virus. Interestingly, he has been so healthy and active in his short life. He has been on Fromms puppy gold since I brought him home at eight weeks. Eats three meals per day and the suggested amount is 1-7/8 cup per day for his weight and age. He was 22 pounds at 7 months. Yes, a big boy! He could have definitely picked up something during our walks.

At the recommendation of a friend, I tried Diggit, pumpkin and apple pectin powder at the last feeding. Fingers crossed I see improvement tomorrow. My friend swears by this stuff because her Great Dane gets diarrhea from heartworm medicine.

My girl was on Fromm Puppy Gold too...I love the Fromm foods and all my dogs were eating different varieties. I did find, though, when we couldn't shake the runs in my puppy, that I had to switch her to a single-protein food with a lamb base. It took months to sort out her digestive system. She'd go a week with good stools and then back to pudding. Finally, at just over a year old, she's improving. Makes me wonder if it had something to do with her system just maturing. I still have her on the single-ingredient food, BTW, and a good Natures Farmacy probiotic daily. Just something to tuck in the back of your mind....

Thanks for responding, Ann. He has done beautifully on the Fromm's puppy gold.Nice coat, easily digestible and firm stools. He has not had Puppy Gold for nearly two weeks now, but is eating chicken and rice. Yesterday, I did add this pumpkin apple pectin supplement in powder form, that a friend recommended. I also added it this morning to his chicken and rice and his stool was formed, though still soft and not brown, but definitely some definition. Hoping this is not a coincidence with the pumpkin-apple pectin powder supplement, but maybe he is really on the mend. Thinking of withholding this pumpkin and see if the stools continue to improve. I have a call into my vet and will be heading home tomorrow.

So since you switched foods, have the loose stools subsided?

Deska regularly gets the runs. When he's on metronidazole it can take anywhere from 7 days to 2 weeks to completely settle. If it takes more than a week I use the metronidazole in conjunction with Ensal - which is a Kaolin mix with sulfar and methobromide (for nausea) and some electrolytes. Although the latest bout I'd ran out of Ensal and he had it for 3 weeks, until I remembered to order some more Ensal. It makes a big difference just adding that in. So perhaps try a Kaolin/Pectin mixture - there is a canine version.

It took a few months, but she now has normal stools. I don't know that the cause was multiple protein sources in her food, but my vet and I agreed that it seemed like a good idea to rule it out and go with a single protein source. Every once in a while she gets soft, and I give her a dose of ProPectalin which cures it overnight. It sounds like your pumpkin supplement is similar with pectin in it. I wouldn't stop the supplement too soon...it can take a few days for it to really work.

I love the Fromm foods and all my other dogs are on Fromm...both the Adult Gold and Senior Gold. I've raised all my puppies on Puppy Gold with great results too. But not every food works for every dog, and I've learned that sometimes you have to individualize their diets and supplements. Mine is one of those cases!

You know that Giardia is intermittent shedding and can easily be missed? It also cycles where it gets better and worse. I live in California and pretty much everyone has had it one time or other. So have many many pets. Keep an eye on it. My shepherd came full up with Giardia and coccidia and barely had soft stools. I have known a lot of dogs who have grown into intolerances to chicken or beef. Perhaps try lamb? Lamb is so well tolerated by dogs.

UPdate, the vet we saw last week (while on vacation) suggested Flora Flora and my primary vet who returned from vacation this week discouraged its use and suggested 100L% all bran mixed with cooked ground beef, fat removed, and to form into 1-4" meatballs and feed two per feeding, 5-6 times per day. He wants to take it slow since he is thinking his small or large intestine is irritated and needs frequent small meals.

That was yesterday and i am seeing a slight improvement each day. Fingers crossed we are on the road to well formed stoops soon. Again, he is acting normally, good appetite and loves his walks. He is still on Flagyl and once a normal movement occurs, i will stop the Flagyl. Cubby, if he does, in fact, have Giardia, this will help eliminate it. Not sure about the Coccidia. I will see my vet if the stools do not improve in a few days.

I think i will continue with the Diggit Pumpkin and apple pectin supplement, too. Thanks for everyone's input and i will keep you updated.
