Shelby’s eye

We noticed last week that Shelby’s eye was red. So I called the vet and they said to send them a picture - when we took the picture we saw that Shelby had a sty under her top eye lid. The vet felt this was causing the redness and instructed us to use lubricating drops and call if it doesn’t improve.

Well it isn’t getting better, it isn’t worse either. It doesn’t bother her or cause her any pain. I spoke to the vet today- tomorrow morning my husband will take her in and they are going to try and freeze it and give antibiotic ointment. Because of her age, high blood pressure and elevated liver enzymes they will not put her under anesthesia to surgically remove it. So they are hoping that freezing it might get rid of it. They do not need to give anesthesia to do this.

Our previous girl had the same thing and even though the vet cut hers out it eventually just grew back. So I am cautiously optimistic that this will help.

Fingers crossed everything goes well.

Checkers has had several of those on her eye and we've been lucky that she was young enough to have them removed. I just had her in a week ago for another one, and at 16, I won't have anesthesia for her unless it's life-threatening. We did a week of antibiotic ointment and it does seem better. I hope the freezing works for Shelby, I hadn't heard of doing that. What a great option! Please let us know how she does.

Gavin's anesthesia at 17 was scary (for me at least). It was unplanned (I didn't know about it beforehand.. was supposed to be sedation).
He was shivering when I picked him up 4 hours after his surgery was over.
It took several hours of him laying on me, covered in a blanket, for him to be better.
The next day he was eating and drinking, but the first few hours were not fun.

Thanks everyone.

Everything went well- the vet said it isn’t a stye, she said it is similar to a skin tag and she felt it was a lot smaller than the picture we sent last week. She said a lot of times these just go away on their own, but she froze it anyway. She also did a test for dry eye and it turns out Shelby has very dry eyes. Only producing 8 tears when it should be a minimum of 15. And her non-red eye was worse than the red eye. The dry eye probably cause this lump. So we just have to give her gel drops twice a day.

the vet said she just sat there calmly while they froze it and while they did the dry eye test. The vet said she knew Shelby would do just fine which is why she suggested doing the freezing. We are lucky that Shelby is so easy going and really does not care about anything.

So thankfully nothing to be concerned about and we are good until her next checkup in 2 months.

Nice to know everything went so well, interesting about the dry eyes. I haven't had that diagnosed in any of my dogs but it makes you wonder if it was an issue and I just didn't know. Easy enough fix with some eye drops.
