Shelby was back in the ER last night

Thank you everyone. Today she is a lot better. She is walking almost 100% normal outside on the grass and our stone patio. She is finally able to walk on our hardwood floors without falling. Not 100% normal but she is now able to get around.

Now the hard part is trying to let her walk but not too much. So we keep her on the leash outside so she can’t try to chase the critters. And we will continue to crate her at night and whenever we are not home. We will do this for about a week or so until we know she is completely better.

Fortunately the pain meds and anti-inflammatories make her sleepy so at
least it forces her to rest up.

I really do not think she dislocated her hip like the ER vet thought. Our 1st Sheltie dislocated her shoulder and she was in non stop excruciating pain, to the point she bit me. Shelby was yelling in pain but it wasn’t non-stop. And the vet said she only showed pain when he manipulated her in 1 direction and then after that she didn’t express any pain. I am thinking she pulled a muscle or something when she slid on the floor. We will see what our vet has to say on Wednesday. Hopefully she will continue to improve.

I'd suggest boots for slippery floors (you can just do rear if thats where she has issues). Gavin uses both ruffwear hiking griptex boots and summit trex boots. Actually, I have so many I can send you a pair if you measure her paw and it is close enough to 1.75 inches across (Gavin has worn through quite a few pair, but he only wears them out at the tips from toe touching which wouldn't be an issue for any dog that walks on the bottom of their paw).

so I went through my collection (yes I have a collection of dog boots), and I have a set of non name ones I bought from amazon that I haven't even used as well. I could send 2 of those, they are more substantial (If you like those I can look up what they are). I found 2 summit trex I could send, they have a softer boot bit. I actually rotate through more boots than you'd think when Gavin has oopsies and steps in his poop!

Very happy to hear she’s doing better today! It’s so hard to make them not walk when they hurt themselves! Piper injured his shoulder when he was 2 1/2 and it took a month of rest and carrying him and everything on leash and then another month of rest after a cortisone shot! I felt so bad for the little guy but you gotta do what you gotta do. Hardest part was getting my 90 year old mother to understand why he had to be crated all the time! He’s 7 now and aside from a few hiccups after he never had another problem with it.

Oh no. poor Shelby, she can't catch a break.

So darn hard to know what is wrong. We think Tully partially dislocated her hip and it went back in by itself but not correctly and it wasn't picked up until the calcification, after which she had the hip replacement. I can even place where the injury happened, but she's such a stoic dog she soldiered on. Mind you, I knew something was wrong - the ortho specialist kept telling me it was her shoulder, after months of not getting better I asked if she could xray her back end and sure enough it was her hip not her shoulder. The moral being that even the specialist vets can be fooled about which part of the body is sore.

found 2 summit trex

Thank you very much Cindy- I really do appreciate the offer. Our vet gave us some pads to try tonight. She is walking much better today.

I am so sorry to hear this happened. It is so difficult when they are hurt.

We had a visit with our vet tonight to follow up with her gallbladder and now her hip. We received all good news.

Her liver enzymes are now in normal range, and they haven’t been there the past few years. So the Ursodiol is working. He blood sugar is normal- we believe it was high from the stress. And the heart murmur the ER vet insisted she had, she does not have. Our vet feels that was also caused by stress. We may switch to a liver diet after our vacation, it is tough to find chicken free. Her current food is only 16% fat, after our vet takes a look at the food she might say this is OK.

Her hip- vet could not find anything wrong. Maybe it dislocated and went back but we will never know. Said it will just take time to heal and get her strength back. We have exercises to do with her and if she is still having issues after a few weeks we will take her for some physical therapy. She also gave us some pads to put on s
Shelby’s foot to help her not slip as much.

So we were pleasantly surprised at how well this visit was. We will continue to follow up every 3 months because of her gallbladder.

Thank you everyone for all your support and well wishes! The Sheltie Nation family is the best!♥️
