Sheltie color question

Kinda OT, but not.

The other day, I saw a Sheltie with an all white body. BUT, it's head was Blue Merle (I believe it had two blue eyes too).

Just curious what category that'd fall into.

And how do you tell a tri-color from a mahogany sable? Always wondered that.
(Nevermind this question. Just saw the pictures from the link someone gave earlier)

Thanks!

Thanks. I had never seen one all white with a blue merle head only before. :) It was interesting that's for sure. and so very well-behaved.

I really love the chw's I am considering getting one to show in the next couple of years. my daughter wants a sable so we might have to compromise a bit on the color

The trick to telling the difference between a dark sable and a tri-color dog is to look at the individual hairs.

In a tri-color dog, the black hairs will be completely black from root to tip. In a sable dog, the dark hairs will be red at the base.

Undercoat will also be different. The sable dog will have a cream colored undercoat, while the tri-color dog will have a grey/black undercoat.

You can also look at the head.

A sable will always have the pointed mask (like Lassie's), while a tri-color will have the Doberman-type mask (black down the muzzle and tan eyebrows.)

Not always. I have a mahogany sable that has a mask that more closely resembles the tan point mask of a tri than the pointed mask of a sable.
