research study shows that dinotefuran/ Vectra/ vs. Imidacloprid/ Advantix/ better results for Vectra as far as fleas are concerned. Both are strong insecticides used for landscaping and very toxic.
Neither Advantix of Vectra is safe around cats and as long term cat owner I would not use them. Once I was given a kitten full of fleas and all I did is to keep bathing every day for about a week until I could see no more fleas. I do apply boric acid behind baseboards and cabinets mostly for ants protection which also helps with controlling fleas if they cross into house. So far my cats are outdoor cats and we have no issues.
Same goes for the garden- I do not use any insecticides or fertilizers/ except natural manure and humus/, but have variety of protective plants growing through the garden, rue, chives, garlic, tansy, feverfew, mugworth- almost any herb and strong/pungent smell of plants will discourage bugs and once you achieve natural homeostasis it keeps itself clean.
My thinking- keep your pup healthy, give little garlic and give your pup bath very often with very gentle hypoallergenic shampoo for a while and you fleas will be gone.

In response ot revolution not working...

Well my vet told me,they had issues of returning pets test positive for heartworm.It was not the medication..it was the improper way it was administered.
95% of the pets that tested positive,were long haired dogs.when you are putting this stuff on,one needs to be absolutely sure it is all the way down to the skin.

I heard the same thing about Revolution. My vet does not carry for that reason, since people seem unable to apply it properly.

She recommends Advantage, Frontline and Frontline Plus (treats fleas and ticks) for our area.

The breeder we got our 2 "kids" from told me DO NOT USE IVERMECTIN for shelties or collies....something about it very dangerous for collies/shelties.

Knock on wood.....real hard! It has been a very long time since we had a flea problem, like 15 yrs. Back then we had 1 dog, 1 cat. Had to flea bomb, same day had animals dipped ect.....Then I read up, got rid of as much carpeting as we could and started using a brewers yeast product. Thats it, no fleas: 2 dogs, 4 cats!

For cats tho they do better w/o the yeast and earthanimal.com sells a yeast free powder for animals w/yeast sensitivties.
