Hi there! I am a new sheltie owner and she, Sophie, is so adorable. 8 months old, I got her at 6 months old. She weighs about 5 lbs 10 oz. After getting her, 2 weeks later she started rocking side to side, weak, and falling over. we took her to vet and she was given seizure medicine, fluids, and a antibiotic. she was fine pretty quickly. Now she seems to rock back and forth every once in awhile. 4 more times but not falling over, mild cases. I try and give her some water and put her to bed and she is fine and running around in morning. I dont know if due to her being so little she gets dehydrated fast or if shes tired but usually after extreme running around all day with puppy playdates sets the rocking motion. Tonight she was worse with no playdates or crazy activity. I did give her sub Q fluids, and she felt better and sleeping it off now. Its almost seizure like but not really. Anyone have any ideas or have dealt with similar symptoms with their pups? My kids and I hate watching her like this, tonight she was weak and very unstable. Hoping for some answers... Thanks for your time!!

Hi and welcome. Sorry to hear Sophie is having problems. She is very, very small for a sheltie of her age and I would worry her size could have resulted in congenital issues. But I don't think her size will cause dehydration as dogs of any size can suffer heat stroke and dehydration, and the flat faced breeds are much more prone.

I've seen lots of dogs with shaking and rocking issues but there's so many causes that it's hard to say what it could be. First I guess would be to determine if it is epilepsy. Seizures can actually take different forms, they don't always have to shake or pass out.

Can you video her rocking motion? I think this would be very useful to show a vet.

He small size and signs make me think of a liver shunt. Did she have bloodwork or bile acid test?

I heard this years ago that the runt of the litter or on the very small size would
have more of a chance to have liver problems. I wonder why this would happen?

They are not at risk for liver disease because they are small. They are small(not always) because they have liver disease(shunt).
