Sheltie smells like pee! How to keep her clean?

I wouldn't shave his belly, but you could trim his hair some around his privates.

Also - the baby wipe idea is terrific. Quick swipe when he comes inside.

My one sheltie pees on herself. Yes I use wipes, and Gold Medal Oatmeal
deep moisturizing cream from Petsmart. It seems to work on the stink. I have to clean her up often, otherwise its pee crust when it dries. Its great to get the pee out of the hair, without giving them a bath all the time.

It seemed to help for me to trim his fur off the end of his ***** and give him a quick wipe whenever he came in. It sucks if it's really windy, though! :biggrin2:

I've never had an issue with either of the boy's anal glands. I imagine they are kept clean and healthy by the raw diet I feed. A good firm bone-poo every couple of days will clean them out nicely. And though I have heard of dogs expressing their glands when they get upset, I've never encountered it myself. My guys rarely get upset, pretty tolerant and accepting of everything.

I find that too, GeeRome. A couple days after I switched to raw, he started having these squeaky clean poops! I haven't had to clean his bum in a week and a half!! haha! I'm loving it! That's only the beginning of a list that has started since I switched! :biggrin2:

Since you feed kibble(at least I assume you are)...you can use baby wipes. Just keep them by the door, and wipe her once she gets in the door. Once you start doing it for a couple days it'll become like second nature lol

As far any smell....I don't know what it is about Bacca but so far he is the sweetest smelling dog I've smelt in a long time. Maybe all puppies smell that way...I don't remember. But David, who is very finicky about anything seeming remotely dirty loves to pick up Bacca and inhale (just like you do with a human baby....you know that delicious smell they have!):smile2:

Same here, Barb!!
My friend who has a Sheltie was over just the other week and sniffed him and she was like "Aaaah, Sheltie smell!! I love the way they smell!" And it's true...they all seem to smell SO fresh!! I think it's partially(well, right now) because of the winter air...I love taking a big whiff when he comes in from a romp in the cool breeze! But even in the summer...the air just gets right in there, doesn't it?

Now excuse me while I go sniff my dog!

Ok - just to play devil's advocate!

You can definitely have squeaky clean poops on the right dry food or the right combination of raw food!

I'm not saying that raw is right or wrong. Or kibble is right or wrong. Both are equally acceptable as long as you find the formula that works for your pup. And works for your lifestyle.

What I have determined is that some food works great for some pups and not so great for others. Some swear by Wellness, but others day that it gives runny poops. It's all trial by error, I think.l

FYI - I feed my boys dry kibble - the only time I had a stinky bum problem was when I introduced a smoked bone to them.

Don't get to anal about this. Decide what works for you, your pups and your budget. When I was growing up, my parents bought "whatever" at the grocery store. If you think your pup is not thriving then look at switching food.

I'd love to hear from breeders here. I know what what my breeders told me. Straight up kibble, both medium grade. And both with healthy everything.

I read all the posts here and am wondering what to do with Chinook. He gets pee ALL over his underside - I mean everywhere! all the way to the posterior of his front legs! I cannot shave his entire underside - he'd look ridiculous. I never had this problem with my last male sheltie. Chinook, seems to pee forwards and he comes in dripping (yuk!) I can't bathe him daily. I have no problems with his bum, just his pee! Any advice? Should I shave him? or should I just resign to washing his underneath daily?

Maybe once he has his surgery he will begin lifting his leg and won't have this issue anymore...... now that you know. Just a thought!

Oh, I completely agree with you Barb!!
And no intention on offending!! :smile2: If you can find the right kind of kibble for your pups, squeaky clean poops are possible! And all the power to you! It was just in my personal experience that raw worked out better for Caliber and I. It's just that there are SO many products out there that claim to be something they're not, and more often then not it causes problems. Sad...just sad.

And..........how is it that we Sheltie Forumers ALWAYS end up talking about poop no matter what the subject is!?!!

My boys....both still squatting - even after fixin g! My forever pup never lifted his leg, ever!

At this point they either squat or lift. I think Shelties tend to squat because I think they are genetically less inclined to "mark" their territory. But I'm makinjg alot of assumptions here.

He does lift his leg - everywhere, and still gets it all over himself. But, since his diagnosis of Leg Calve Perthes Dx, I am thinking maybe because it hurts he is peeing differently??? I will have to see when his surgery is done and he is better (by late summer I hope).
No problems with poops, as he is on raw food, so they come out nice and firm, never soft, so at least his back end is nice and clean - maybe one day I will take a nice picture of his behind too  and post it. :wink2:
