Shelties and Water!

Indy swims again.....!

Coming back from our island cottage, we had alot of trouble docking the boat. The water level has dropped so low that the boat's propellers were getting caught in weed and mud at the marina. The boat was not handling properly and David had a tough time getting it into the slip.

Added to this is we add extra people on the boat, just to add to the confusion.

Our normal routine is straight forward. I jump off, tie up the boat, while David opens up the crate to let the dogs out. Indy always jumps straight off the boat onto the dock by himself - it's usually a jump about 2 feet long by 2.5 feet high.

Well we finally get the boat into the slip - but pulled up from the back of the dock about 3 feet longer than usual. The boat just did not want to move. So the jump is now about 5 feet long by 2.5 feet high.

So, now you have to picture this in slow motion. I'm standing on the dock and finishing tieing up the boat. I glance up and see David unzipping the crate. I shout: "David....don't let the dog out, he'll try to jump and he will...." BIG SPLASH "....miss! :eek2: Too late!

Yikes! Dog goes under about 3 feet, bobs back up and gets hauled out by his collar.

Indy is still drying out....4 hours later. And he keeps looking at me funny, like it was my fault or something! :rolleyes2::winkgrin:

Boy your two are daredevils around water. How heavy is a dripping wet sheltie to drag out of the water - twice the weight do you think?

My Mom kept saying how "fat" Indy was, all weekend.

When we hauled him out of the water dripping wet, she finally admitted that he was really not fat at all, just a fluff ball!

And how heavy is a dripping wet Sheltie....definitely twice the weight.

And btw - he's still giving me the eye.....

LOL, oh my god, you'd think he had learned his lessons...

Did you guys know that there is this new Sheltie Specialty Atlantic Wave Herding? Toffee does this everytime I go to the Beach here, he barks at the waves, each time they crest and chases them out to the Ocean and then runs back before he gets caught in it, and gets ready for the next wave crashing loud...
Do you guys know how often the Atlantic crashes against the shores of Nova Scotia??? I have been trying to count, but I can assure you it is enough to keep a Sheltie happy for approximately one hour and 15 minutes before happily collpasing in a heap of sand and seaweed......
I do recommend a beach with little to no people as Shelties can really bark as loud and as often as the Atlantic crashes against the shore ;)

I'll bet that'll cure Indy from those spontaneous dock jumps, right?? Glad he is OK and everything turned out okay. Oh yes, that lovely wet Sheltie smell...with lake water, no less! :uhoh:
