puppy fur is not usually as furry as adults- they are poofier with puppy fluff.

it can take up to 3 years for full adult coat so you will have to be patient :winkgrin:
 
you are experiencing the puppy gangly stage.
once he fills out a bit and the coat comes in a tad he will look more like what you expect. His coat will change over time (color and thickness) , and some dogs never have as much coat as others. My boy (5.5yr old gavin)
has gotten darker over the years and has a moderate coat (never as fluffy as some of the dogs here).

definitely all sheltie, though.

Like others have said some shelties don't get their full coat for years. Here is my little fluff ball Ember at 5 months. She is a major hairball now.

Yes, I thought there was something wrong with my little 'Coyote ugly' at that stage... I couldn't wait for Toffee's fur to grow :o Now it's tumbleweeds galore, after three years of saying oh no, he doesn't shed all that much, lol :no: He still doesn't have the undercoat some others have and I can't say I am upset about it, lol

Thanks so much for the honest replies, everyone! I'm totally obsessed with Samson. I want to take him everywhere with me! I think he's going to be quite dapper as he fills out, and it's great to see that so many of you experienced this strange transitional age with short-ish fur. I don't want his fur to become coarse - I pet a sheltie that had a very coarse outer-coat and it made me sad, because he's so soft!!!!!! I like to sniff the hair around his ears, it's so feathery and crimpy :)

Okay enough of my gushing.

Just watch the fur around his ears - it will mat very very easily. I use cornstarch when I brush to help keep out the mats. Others used baby powder.
 
ahhhh THAT look... Toffee after a day at the beach has the crimped, feathery look.
and we are pretty darn obsessed over Shelties around here, even if we disagree on something we will always be reconciled by our love for the breed and dogs in general!!!!
