Shelties don't fetch?

yes, that's it exactly.
Happy taught Callie to bark when I get home from work- so of course, Cran learned it too. and Dixie barks way more than the other two so she was quite happy to join in

Yep - Liam did the same. Emma rarely barked when I came home, now she does. Liam goes absolutely crazy. When I draw up in front of the house to back into the driveway, he is already at the window barking. And he has now decided to give one loud bark when he wants outside. Never did that until this weekend. Oh the joys of our Shelties when they find their voices.

I have a question for everyone who has ball crazy shelties. How many of your shelties can do a dead retrieve. Dead retrieve being the object(ie ball) is not throw but place or is laying somewhere away from you and you point to it and they get it.

I consider a dog that will naturally do a dead retrieve a natural retriever. Justice did. None of my others did and it was hard to teach them. My Lab would do dead retrieve naturally. I was just wondering how common it is in shelties as Justice is the only one I've known. I bet Bitsy can.:smile2:

I've actually never tried this with Cran :rolleyes2:
will have to check it out

Its funny when I play with the ball outside, Noah, Six, Tucker and Mia they will all bring the ball back and of course its a race to see who can the ball first...it also of course depends on who gets the ball...Mia (who is the smallest) is generally the bully of the playground. If she gets the ball she will guard it and wont let anyone have it and they all sit there and sulk...its actually quite funny to see! Noah sounds like Bailey. He will play with his tennis ball ALLLL day long. He will bring it in the house and roll it off the couch hop off grab it jump back up roll it off and repeat this until I grab the ball from him. If he's tired and doesnt feel like doing the on/off the couch with the ball he will sit 3 feet from me and push the ball toward me so I can roll it back to him...He really is quite a ham!!!

Revel will, but he has been trained to it. Yogi will if it is one of his favourite retrieve articles, ball, dumbell, toy etc but not to a glove etc.

Part of our display team routine is we all put a toy in the centre of the circle of dogs and each dog in turn has to pick out his/her own toy. To make it harder there are some general toys which do not belong to anyone.

In getting a sheltie to retrieve, it might help as well to have a special toy which is only ever used for this, nothing else, and which the dog dosn't have access to at any other time. It really does help to keep them interested.

Tully is the retriever at our oval. A lot of the other dogs drop their balls before bringing them back so other owners just tell Tully to get the ball and she does. Had a friend who would bring her BC to play ball with Tully just so she didnt have to walk to get the ball her dog dropped (she had a failed hip replacement). Although I do wonder sometimes if Tully's 'girlfriends' now drop the ball early on purpose so that Tully can bring it back in.

Deska will retrieve items when told. But he mostly learnt this in obedience classes and it was actually his favourite part of obedience. In fact on several occassions he ran off and got the dumbell out of my pocket/bag because he wanted to retrieve.

I think retrieve is often an easier thing to teach dogs than fetch. Comes in handy too if you want them to find your keys.

Sandstorm will not fetch unless the ball is moving, otherwise, he doesn't care.

My Sheltie Lulu plays fetch all the time either with us or by herself. She throws it around and catches it on her own. She keeps herseld occupied!

Myla lives for a game of fetch...Holden its all about tug of war and Chance will do whatever Myla tell's him to do...
