I agree with you Clantyresheltie, deal with the bugs first. Also, my last dog had bad allergies and I'd asked the vet about Benadryl and he said they didn't know if the drug actually worked or if it just made the dog tired which then stopped it from itching, licking etc.

This is actually an old thread - so I assume they've dealt with the problem.

I would also be wary of the website mentioned (the anydogrescue)- there is absolutely no indication who the person is giving this advice or where the advice comes from. And it's written in poor English. I would never trust a site that is not from a credible source. There are many veterinary sites that give a list of antihistamines and dosages, which can be found with Google search.
