Sheltie's unknown death

Sherrill, I am so very sorry for your loss of your sweet furbaby. To lose them at such an early age is heartbreaking, but add to that that you don't have any definitive answers makes the lose doubly hard. I send to you and your family my deepest sympathies and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. :fl :(

What a horrible loss, I am so sorry
14 months is way too young to lose your pup, I can only say I am so sorry. Too young, too fast.

others disagree

The booster per se might not have had anything to do with it, but consider that if an animal has a challenge to its immunity while in the beginning stages of fighting any other infection, it might very well have caused that other infection to take hold rapidly, where otherwise it might have been successfully fought off.

This is an archive article-but info is still valid IMHO, again a different camp than most, but never hurts to explore the other side of the fence, especially if you have had a bad experience with a treatment, procedure, med, etc. I like the charts showing what was experienced by some dogs, and really HOW do you know beforehand if your dog will be that unique dog that reacts.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss,

There are reports that Advocate/Advantage (they are the same treatment, but one is the pet version you can buy without prescription) have caused bad reactions in collie breeds, such as Shelties.

My brother has a new Border Collie pup and when she went for her first vaccine he asked for a flea spot-on. They gave him Advocate and he happened to read the information leaflet and it stated that collies and collie-crosses can have reactions to the spot-on and should be monitored after treatment.

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to know if your pup suffered a side-effect from the vaccine, or the Advocate, or it was produced by both, or even that it was a coincidence and she suffered an unrelated illness.

What I'm talking about is not a bad reaction, but rather, the vaccine working exactly the way a vaccine is supposed to work, by offering a challenge to the immune system. In weakening the immune system by that challenge, an animal whose system is already under attack by something will have fewer resources to fight that something.

I am so sorry your little one passed away. I wonder too if the immune system
wasn't up to par.
