Shelties vs. Collies

I think this is huge question and if we can answer it we might finally be able to bed the question of mini-collie vs. sheltie.

It's probably been said before, but the question is really sheltie vs. giant-sheltie. :biggrin2: Credit where credit is due, after all.

My Beau would convince anyone, definitely sheltie, He's the sweetest thing on earth And contrary to what others say he rarely barks.

He does B* slap me every once in a while. Like, the other day I wasn't feeling well so I went to take a nap. Beau wasn't having any of that especially since it was during his walk time he came running from the living room and jumped up on my bed and slapped me on my head. " Get your butt up out bed momma what you think your doing." But, he does make me laugh, and only he can get way with doing that, Any one else might get slapped back:hide:yuckyuck

I have spent a couple years postive I wanted a sheltie. I had a "Lassie" as a child. I put off the last year and a half getting one due to putting a home on the market and knowing it wasnt great time to potty train showing a house. Now I am finally moved but having a difficult time finding a girl.
I read this whole thread and scratching my head Collie-sheltie, sheltie-collie? What I really want is one of each now but that might make my companion think I have totally lost my mind, that would be a hard convincing ploy.
I spent a few years playing lassie movies, my dog skip, winn dixie, placing little doggy figurines around the house and so on to the point that it worked.
One of my biggest problems is I have a siamese female that rules the roost and well she is manipulative and demanding, but truthfully we let her run the show and love her for that mind that has the wheels always turning. I am afraid she will teach all her bad habits and manners to a new family member. We love her too much, but she really is onery.
The other problem is I am in a gated community and we are not allowed fences around our homes and that rules out sheltie rescue here where I live. Their rules are must have a fenced yard. Does everyone have a fenced yard? Wouldnt walks on leashes and dog park visit be ok for these babies?

i know someone who lives in a gated comm. and they were not allowed to put a fence up, but were allowed a ''dog run'', so their ''dog run'' is 20 ft by 30 ft . just a thought

Sheltie without a yard!

I've never had a yard and our wMighty Quinn is our 5th. I have used a tie out to give my dogs some freedom to roam at potty time. We now have a large wrap around patio with a porch potty. For exercise we go for walks, visit the off leash dog park, and we have a wonderful dog walker.

My shelties have all been sweet, loving, personable dogs who were/are wonderful with kids, adults and other animals. It's hard to beat that.

I grew up with collies, and as a military family, we never had fences on post. Our dogs were mostly house dogs who were walked frequently and occasionally tied out. As an adult, I didn't initially have a fence for my two rescued collies. They also spent most of their time in the house. I did eventually add a fence for them. After they passed away, we ended up with a border collie and recently a sheltie. Collies are active, but my sheltie is such a spaz. (And I say that with all the love possible.) I can't imagine not having a fence for her. We joke that we need to hurry and let her out so she can come back in. Ive had many collies and just one sheltie, but I think a collie is better suited for a yard without a fence.

So, we might be adding a collie to our family of 2 blue Shelties! A blue smooth girl. :) Just had to resurrect a semi-dead thread to share the news!

I had 4 collies as a kid, loved them all. Totally amazing dogs.

We live in Florida so Shelties are perfect - my husband is 6'3" and our last big guy was a large Sheltie, 53 pounds of wonderful dog. His name was Murphy and he just passed away 02/18/2013 (liver disease). We did everything we could.

We have a female Sheltie age 7. We :smile2:would love a large Sheltie.

So sorry to hear about Murphy passing. it is a wonderful tribute to his memory to get another sheltie. Depending on where you are in FL there are several good sheltie rescues with some gorgeous dogs. Jacksonville & Mid Florida come to mind 1st off. If you decide to get another sheltie try checking with them. They can be habit forming!!
