Shots and immunity

My vet is getting ready to retire and has sold the practice. I have not met the new vet just yet as my appointments have been on days when the old guy is in. He suggested rabies when she gets her next shot and didn't say anything about another baby shot. I'm not sure if he does 4 or not. If not we may have to find another vet. There is a holistic one in Redlands, we used to see her many years ago here in town, but Redlands is not close and I don't know about any other local vets. I'll have to do some checking around if I don't like the new vet.

Why wouldn't he do four? You just schedule one more on or after 16 weeks. I am surprised an older vet would undervaccinate. If anything, they overvaccinate.

I have not asked if he does a forth at 16 weeks. I guess I just assumed that if he was going to do rabies at 13.5 weeks (too young and not happening) that he would have done all shots by then. I will call them tomorrow and ask. I do want her to have another at 16 weeks.

I'm with Cara. In California the parvo rate is extreme! You cannot be too cautious. My vet had us taking our shoes off, before coming in the house and disinfecting them with bleach/water solution. She didn't even want Pyper out in the front yard. If the vet is this cautious, I figure there is a reason!

I socialized Pyper by taking her with us to trials and matches and club practice, but kept her in an ex pen on a tarp. She didn't get to touch the grass until she was fully vaccinated. Each time I got home I disinfected the tarp, before we used it again. Better safe than sorry!

Shelties lovers

In my opinion we are sheltie-lovers, and it's a big diference between other -lovers. As well as our dogs are shelties and no other breed, that makes the difference.

We all are exceptional super-care-dog because we have super-dogs!:wink2:

I'm being super careful too. Lacey goes out with me, but her dainty little feet don't touch the ground unless it's in the house or the back yard. I can't wait to be done with this phase and have her fully vaccinated.

No kidding! At least Lacey is a little un. Carrying around my 13 pound beast is awful. But no more -- from now on -- we walk!

I don't think Lacey has made it to 5lbs yet. I have not weighed her though, but she is growing. Getting longer and starting to get taller too.

We all make the best decisions we can for our puppies. We invest our time, money and heart in these incredible little souls and want what is the very best life for them.

I have taught puppy classes for more than 12 years at the local obedience club. I am a AKC CGC and Puppy Star evaluator. Each session I get one or more 6 month old puppies who are exhibiting stress behaviors to situations that early socialization could have prevented or lessened.

The window for early adaptability closes at about 12 weeks of age.

Here are several good articles.

Judy, it would be good to have other people pet Lacey. You can ask them to wash their hands first, but she will be handled by vets, staff, and you would probably like her to accept petting by your friends and relatives too. It would be good for her to get used to this now.
