Shots and immunity

I have been letting people I know pet her. I will have wipes with me at the show on Saturday so people can pet her there.

It's really not about isolation vs socialization. It is VERY important to have the dog petted and handled and taken to a variety of places early. That is NOT in question.

Hands can be wet-wiped and all is good.

It's about walking around on the ground. Since we are blessed with small enough dogs to carry as pups, there is no need to risk parvo in the name of socialization. Just don't go walking around the neighborhood on leash or into Petsmart or into the vet's office lobby or a park or a dog park or in the front yard or in a yard where foxes traffic.

Look at the California posters . . . we ALL know parvo is rampant. ALL our vets are very stern about protecting the pups. Go and do, just don't touch the ground.

She is either hand carried or in a crate. Her dainty little paws only are on the ground in my house and back yard. I still worry about parvo though.

We all make the best decisions we can for our puppies. We invest our time, money and heart in these incredible little souls and want what is the very best life for them.

I have taught puppy classes for more than 12 years at the local obedience club. I am a AKC CGC and Puppy Star evaluator. Each session I get one or more 6 month old puppies who are exhibiting stress behaviors to situations that early socialization could have prevented or lessened.

The window for early adaptability closes at about 12 weeks of age.

Here are several good articles.

This is a vet round table:

I never let Pyper's little feet touch the ground accept in our house or the backyard until she was fully vaccinated. She passed her CGC at 6 months, with flying colors! Puppies can begin to be socialized without being exposed to the dangers of parvo.

We just got back from the vet, I had them trim her nails since I'm too much of a chicken to do it myself.

Lacey is a whopping 4.8lbs now at 12 weeks.

They only do 3 DHPP shots, but will do a forth if I want it. I told them I did.

It is going to be interesting to see how big she gets as a full grown girl.

Getting closer. Wow. I weighed Cubs at 14.6 at the pet food store in Carmel. I can't imaging FOUR pounds and change.

She is tiny! We were at a match this weekend and looking at other pup's her age made me realize how little she really is. One of the breeders we talked to (the one who showed me how she glues ears and glued hers for me) thinks that she will be about 13.5, but we will just have to see. I think she is going to be slow to reach full size.

Seriously?!? That is the exact same weight Bonnie was at her 12 week weigh in at the vets! :biggrin2:

How funny, so how old and how big is Bonnie now. What does she weigh? I'm just really curious.

At 12 weeks she was 4.8 pounds, 8.7 inches. Now at 14 weeks she is 5.7 pounds and 9.6 inches. (Although taking into account her recent weight was done by me on the bathroom scales - me holding her and then me not holding her, so not sure how reliable that is).

She is due for her last shot in 1.5 weeks, 2 days before she is 16 weeks old so I'll be able to get an accurate weight then!
