Shots and immunity

We go in for 2nd shots tomorrow. I'm nervous about his getting the shots, I mean, how do I know what they are giving him!

And very worried that I have to leave him at noon to go to work. What if he has a reaction?

Demand to see the vials with labels on. A sneaky way to do that is ask for the labels off the vial for your records. It has the brand, the mix, and the lot#. I used to just stick them into the animals' paperwork or on the vet receipt for reference. It's VERY helpful to have the label peeled off the vial.

If you don't trust your vets, I would be shopping for a new vet. Ask people with dogs around you where they go. I asked my Agility trainer since we have to switch vets due to moving.

I'm confused as to why my vet only gives 3 puppy shots and does not think about timing and age. Lacey will get her 3rd shot at 13.5 weeks and they say they only do 3. Everything I have read here says that puppies don't start to build up their own antibodies until they are 15 weeks. My breeder also says they need another shot at 16 weeks. We are going to do an additional at 16 weeks as I want her protected, but why would they only do 3 stopping at 13 weeks?

I don't know what to say about your vet. It sounds like cat shot protocol. Three shots.

That final set MUST land at or after 16 weeks, no matter if that means a series of 3, 4, or even 5! Both Shay and Cubby had 4.

You are welcome -- when I got my Shay I had NO clue on puppies. I had a vet who laid it all out there in no uncertain terms, but at root she told me when and where and what and I did what she said. When Cubs came along I made it a point to do A LOT of research to understand what shots and when and how the whole immunity thing works. This little bull I took by the horns. My only error this time is that the vet slipped corona and lepto into the first two shots. When I really read the paperwork I was horrified and made very sure the last time we did only the 4 n 1. However, I did do rabies at the same time since I saw how well tolerated the whole shots were by Cubby. I just wanted to be done. I would be livid about the lepto but since I go into the mountains and I read the park report that lepto has been found present I figured it might come in handy after all.

I have found this thread to be very helpful too. I would have had no idea other than the breeder's recommendation for the 4 in one at 16 weeks.

My vet PooPoo'ed the breeder's recommendation for giving rabies late since he is required to give it at 4 months. It was also recommended that I give her half a Benadryl an hour before the appointment the vet was not in favor of that either. He mentioned giving rabies to her next week at 13.5 weeks when she gets her next DHPP. She is not getting it then!

I think he is losing it and I can't wait to meet the new vet who is taking over the practice. I think I will make our next appointment with the new vet and see what I think of him. If I don't like him I may be vet shopping.

The office nurse said no to rabies until she is 16 weeks, and I'm not sure if she should get the 4 in one and rabies at the same time. She has not had any reaction from the shots so far.

I'm not quite on topic here but, I think this is a very good idea. Our clinic just added a new doctor and they tried scheduling Petey with him but I knew he was going to need a dental done so I asked to be scheduled with one of the doctors I already knew and was comfortable with. I will schedule our next routine office visit with him just so I can get to know him and see how we like him just in case an emergency pops up and he's the only one available. Better to know ahead of time.
