Shots and immunity

I'm not quite on topic here but, I think this is a very good idea. Our clinic just added a new doctor and they tried scheduling Petey with him but I knew he was going to need a dental done so I asked to be scheduled with one of the doctors I already knew and was comfortable with. I will schedule our next routine office visit with him just so I can get to know him and see how we like him just in case an emergency pops up and he's the only one available. Better to know ahead of time.

There is only one vet, but as I said he just sold the practice and is only there one day a week.
Most of the local vets don't take appointments, just walk in's. I'm not in favor of that. I don't want my dogs to be around any sick animals. I'm not sure where I will go if I don't like the new guy, but I will go somewhere else.

Get your parvo/distemper multi at 16 weeks. Hold the rabies for 2 more weeks and get.

You can't license a dog with the rabies shot til 16 weeks I am told in CA. In fact my vet asked how old is he? 16 weeks and ONE day. OK then.

I would NOT NOT NOT have given both shots at the same time. However, Cubby is 14.5 pounds and the size of a heck of a lot of full grown shelties, I know he is MDR1 negative, AND he had no problems at all with the other shots earlier.

If I had a dainty little one, nope. I'd separate. My bruiser, well, he's a tank.

I also need to micro chip to license. My vet wanted to wait on that until she is bigger the first time I brought her in. I was not planning on getting her chipped then, just wanted to find out when to have it done.

That's kinda a good idea for your county. We don't have that requirement. I had Cub done at like 13 weeks. It was easy peasy, in fact he took it easier than a regular shot. Maybe when you go in that final time for the rabies shot have it done then.

That's what I mean- the new doc who is taking over the practice.

That seems like a strange policy for a medical practice... like a human going to urgent care.... You know everyone in there is sick with something! I hope the new doc works out for you.

I have been emailing with my breeder. He insists that I wait on a rabies shot until at least 8-9 months. He says he has seen 6 month old fat and healthy sheltie puppies die from a rabies shot.

I'm in no rush for her to get a rabies shot, but I am concerned because our county requires rabies by 4 months.

I would love some feedback on this please.

Baker had his 3rd, and final booster shot at 15 1/2 weeks. The vet had planned on doing rabies at the same time but I told him I wanted to spread the shots out a bit. I never worried before, but with Baker being so small I don't want to stress his system more than necessary.

We will also wait a bit to chip, and maybe wait until Spring to do the Lymes shot. Getting ready to do the MDR1 swab - will wait for results to decide on heartworm/flea/tick treatments. Lucky here in WI that none of those little biters have been bad at all this year.

My county requires it within 30 days of 4 months or you pay a $10 penalty for delaying licensing.

Not sure what to say. Your breeder is awfully experienced so I would weight that pretty heavily.

I will just pay a penalty if I have to. He says she is so small and had a rough start. He wants me to wait until she is 8 or 9 months old. I am going to follow his instructions at this point in time. She is just so tiny.

I agree - don't let the government tell you what's best for your fur baby...and, no, I'm not a rebel :)
