Shots for your Shelties

I personally have no time to research this information for you :wink2: But since you are so passionate regarding this subject, it sounds like you have a research project on your hands!

hehehe it's not as fun though as I have no real children so luckily I don't have to fret over that ;) My sister hasn't vaccinated her youngest child though and she's almost four and a healthy, strapping child! LOL

More like its amazing I survived with only 11! :smile2:

I was born in 1980, back when chicken pox was a right of passage and an excuse to stay home from school.

I was born in 1985 and my parents, too, just thought of chicken pox as an excuse to stay home from school for a week! I can't imagine giving my child a shot for chicken pox... it seems so odd. I wasn't even that sick! I just itched a bit...

I was miserable. I had a bad case, and managed to give it to my brother, again. <evil sister> muahahahaha.

Some thoughts on vaccination, to add fuel to the fire-
1) As I have said here before, veterinarians, to their credit, have greatly reduced the number of vaccinations we give. Twenty years ago it was every vaccination, every year, every dog. Now we have core and optional, 3 year instead of 1 year. No one made us do that. Except for rabies, vaccine protocol decisions are in the hands of the individual veterinarian. A stark contrast to human medicine, which is extremely political, (remember the horrid texas HPF vaccine fiasco?), and everything gets required by law to allow the physician to say 'don't look at me...'
We have turned away from so many of the 'vaccine of the month club' vaccines (FIV, FIP, systemic calici, giardia), that they no longer seem so keen to make the effort to produce new ones. Thank goodness.

2.Some vaccinations are given to protect an individual from getting a disease . (Lyme and feleuk in animals, tetanus in humans, for example.) Others are used to develop a 'protected population' where there are not enough exposed individuals to allow an epidemic (Canine distemper, human diphtheria.) If you don't vaccinate your child for diphtheria he won't get it anyway. If everyone starts to think that way, we will have diphtheria epidemics. These are the ones which should never be given to any at risk animals (ie with auto-immune issues) and the ones for which those who DO vaccinate can say 'you can thank me' to those who don't.
So , (controversy alert) take for example cat distemper- for each individual owner it is probably best for that cat not to be vaccinated. But it should be done as the right thing 'acting as a community.' Unfortunately, that is not how most people think these days.

Incidentally, if I may be allowed a brief 'point of personal privilege' here, for some reason on this site my incoming private messages are logged, but replies and outgoing messages are not. I do (occasionally) get private queries about my posts and am happy to answer them all, but I never know if the replies go through.
No biggie, just don't want to offend by having people think I'm ignoring them. Thanks, Dr. Mac

This is an option in your settings. On the top most header on the forum click on "User CP". Then select "Edit Options" on the left hand side (you'll have to scroll down a bit). Scroll to the "Messaging & Notification" section, there is a check box that says "Save a Copy of My Sent Messages". Check that, then scroll down the bottom and click "Save Changes".

That should fix it!

Got ya, thanks. Didnt mean to be dense- I just looked for a way to change it either up top or in the private messaging folder. - Dr. Mac

Back to vaccine talk, didn't mean to butt in.

I thought I asked a pretty good question since there is always a debate with different opinions. I still didnt get alot of answers about the shots for Shelties. And then it jumped to children getting their shots. Seems like that should have been a whole different subject, just saying. And with my main question I sure didnt mean to stir the pot. I had kind of made up my own mind about it anyway but just wanted to get other opinions.

I do rabies every 3 years - mandatory by law. Distemper, Parvo, etc. combo vaccine, I also do every 3 years. I plan to stop the combo when Bailey is 7 years old and titer every few years.

I do not give lyme, flu, kennel cough, gardia or lepto. My breeder warned me against lepto, because some shelties have a bad reaction.
