Siberian Husky fatally shot at park

It is sad, and this is a person who does not need to be in any type of law enforcement, and certainly should not have a carry permit. You have to wonder if he would treat people the same way in his job. Definitely needs his gun taken away.

However, it is legal in the State of Maryland to shoot and kill (without liability) any animal that is threatening your person, livestock or property. This is probably why no charges were filed initially.

Edit: I also don't think this fits the definition of cruelty under Maryland law. I will have to look that up.

We have a similar law that can be used by farmers to protect their livestock - but not for someone to shoot a dog at a public park. Police officers are meant to be trained to react appropriately in stressful situations. If he shot the dog because a kid was getting mauled that's one thing, but by the sounds of it his dog wasnt even injured. A really out of proportion response.

How sad police have to carry guns off duty there. I worked for police for many years and even I wouldnt trust a copper with a gun off work. Our police have to lock their guns away at work when they clock off.

For an off duty police officer to discharge his weapon....he is facing mountains of paperwork. I know my cousin is a Baltimore County Cop, and they hesitate using their guns to "put down" deer who are dying on the side of the road based on all the paperwork that has to follow the gun discharge.

I doubt the GSD was a police dog, as it would not be protocol for the officer to take a police dog to a dog park. It all just does not make sense. I am leaning towards the fact that the officer really has no business carrying a gun, as he is apparently "gun happy" and is not using it as a last resort. I am definitely going to have to follow this story.

Yep you misunderstand Caro it is by far mostly a good thing. The times they stop something before it starts just never really get any notice while the rare case of an idiot like this gets a lot of attention.

Also I have no idea what a federal department would require.

I do think this guy is not going to get the free pass that it started as (and he should not)

I agree that he should not have shot the husky at the park, but we only know one side of the story and have not and will not likely ever hear the officer's side. I find myself being very careful not to judge events, even though it does upset me, without knowing both sides, as there are always two sides to every story. This does not give anyone leeway just to pull out a gun and shoot, but we don't know all the events leading up to the shooting etc.
