Sick twice in a week?

Tuesday, Olive woke us up at 530/6a vomiting. It was pretty much liquid and brown-green. She had a normal appetite, normal energy level, and normal potty breaks (did give me a look for paying so much attention to her “business”), so we chalked it up to a freak accident. The day before the only things she had were her dry food, two small cookies and a little bit of peanut butter (not trader joe’s).

Last night/very this morning she work us up again vomiting. This time we could clearly identify undigested dry food and sweet potato (she had two small disks the evening before and did not chew them as much as I thought she did). She followed DH around as he cleaned it up (his turn) and then went back to bed. So far, today she seems normal but I’m keeping a close eye on her- if she starts acting off again I’m calling the vet.

Neither time has her belly been sensitive to touch so I’m wondering if it’s possible that her dry food is just upsetting her stomach since that's the common factor? As far as I’ve seen, there hasn’t been a recall for it (Natural Choice / Small Breed / Grain Free Limited Ingredient / Fish and Sweet Potato) and we are about halfway through an 8lb bag. We were planning to switch brands when this bag runs out anyway.

And she woke us up again today. Took her in (really like our new vet) and it looks like she has a food irritation. She's put on I/D to see if she's still vomit on that and go from there. The vet suggested she may just be an easy keeper after fending for herself early on so the high quality food may be too much.

We have to laugh- Olive seems to have the same relationship to food as I do. Something upsets the stomach but we're not quite sure what.

I hope she feels better soon.:( It really sucks when they are sick, or hurt because they can't tell us what hurts

Oh no poor pup. We have all been there. Just a thought though, did you give heartworm or flea meds before this happened? Did you change shampoos?

It's always something with our shelties. Here's another thought, Nutro natural choice, grain free dry, does contain powdered cellulose which is non digestible..

Hugs,
Kate

She gets Trifexis at the end of the month so I think it's too far between, same for her bath. Would the cellulose cause vomiting though? She didn't digest all of her food two of the incidents (nothing today!)

The vet is doing a fecal check to see if something is present that could cause her issues.

Yes, it might cause digestion issues and vomiting could occur. Cellulose is not so good for humans or animals. It is being used as filler because it is cheap. Basically it is cotton or wood pulp, shaved down and added as filler being touted as fiber. A lot of people think it is not such a good product to have in your diet and I agree with them.

It's just my opinion, formed from what I have read.

dogfoodadvisor is a good site that tells you just about everything that is in dog food. Give it a quick look.

Good luck with your baby,

Kate

I skimmed the natural choice entry awhile back, must have missed the part about cellulose. We were planning to upgrade to merrick or wellness core before this started, I guess now we just have to see what's messing with her system and go from there (rather not keep her on I/D).

We switched to Fromms dog food several months back. Fromms does well for my pups. They have lower fat and protein formulas which are good for shelties.

No recalls on this brand, ever. A real plus in my book.

Hugs for your little one,

Kate
