Size of harness for 8 weeks old puppy...

It's probable that your breeder will send the puppy home with you already with a collar. My breeder gave me a collar and leash.

That would be even better because all the pet store I went to don't really know how big a sheltie puppy is. Guess I can't do much about the collar until I get the puppy.

I'll be visiting my puppy on Dec 3 (he'll be about 6 weeks old then) and pick up the puppy on Dec 22. Xmas with a new puppy :biggrin2:

Don't know where you shop,but any pet store that cannot help you visualize the size of a 5-7 pd puppy,and give you good service on picking out a harness for one,is truely sad.

If you are set on wanting a harness,bring a small stuffed dog,or look for one in the pet store,and bring it over to where the harness' are.Put the harness on the stuffed toy,and see if it fits right,and you can make the estimated changes.

Most pet store folks,should be knowledgable in helping you,if not I would be shopping elsewhere. A sheltie puppy at that age,probably won't weigh more than 5-7lbs. I don't believe either of ours weighed more than that at the time they were brought home.

Don't waste your money on a martingale at that age,or even less than a year old,Especially if you pay alot for one.They grow way to fast to invest in a martingale that is expensive.

I say yes to a martingale,most definately,but not expensive. I waited till mine were done growing.Both sport beautiful rolled leather martingales,which were a hefty 20.00 ea. I ordered from Ebay,and are handcrafted by Amish. Love them.
Trapp also has a braided leather martingale with is very nice.

But I know that will not be getting any bigger at this point. But unlike some here,I do not use the collar alone with a leash to walk my boys. It aint' happining.
It's a matter of choice,I prefer the harness on them,especailly the one's we have.

Either collar or harness,both should be fitted properly,and take the dog with you once he is home.

Just being the devil's adovate for the pet store but shelties puppies can vary alot in size. Ember was only 3.5 lbs at 9 wks, Diva was 4.4 lbs at 9 wks. Bock was 4.7lbs at 6 wks. :lol:

I borrowed a collar a couple weeks ago for Ember and it was Porter's baby collar that he out grew at 4 months. Still fit Ember with room to spare.:smile2:
 
The ladies at the store suggested the extra small for my puppy. The harness was suppose to fit dog with girth size 8-14". But I don't know what the girth size of an 8 week old puppy will be...and by looking at photos people have posted online of 8 weeks old shelties...they all seem rather big for the harness she had suggested.
