Sniffing

Hi everyone,
So we have recently welcomed a new boy into our home, Nicky. He's a 5 year old sheltie from Southern Ontario Shetie Rescue (amazing organization) and he is a quiet shy boy. Very lovable though and adjusting very well. Our 3 year old boy Tekko is getting along with him very well. No fighting or challenging but there is one really strange thing that Tekko does to Nicky: he sniffs him all over. He gets right in there lifting up his fur and sniffs him. His head, his back, his tummy- everywhere. And then once he's done sniffing him he cries/whines at Nicky. I guess Nicky is not giving him the response Tekko wants so then he looks up at me and starts crying/whinning at me! Does anyone know what all this sniffing and crying is about? We've had Nicky for over a month now so the introductory sniffing has already passed I would think

Have you had Nicky checked by your vet? Perhaps Tekko senses something amiss. Otherwise, he may just be trying to get him to play. Mine do this when they want a romp with another Sheltie.

Have you given Nicky a bath since he has been in your home? Maybe give both dogs a bath with the same shampoo and Nicky will smell like Tekko and not be quite so different.

I wish I knew what that behaviour is about since Dusty does the same thing to the other dogs after I give them a bath. And he has lived with these dogs his whole life. I guess he just doesnt like them to smell good

I was going to suggest the same about the vet visit. I'm sure he was checked out previously by the rescue, but perhaps something else has come up. Bacca has started to sniff Indy around his ears and muzzle lately. And Indy has started to pant even more than usual. I'm getting ready for a vet visit myself.

How is Nicky doing himself? Is he active? Eating well? Playing?

Definitly go to the vet. Anytime a new dog comes into your possession you should go to the vet within 48 hours for a check up. Even if they were done by another vet, you never know. It may have been an untrustworthy vet, or they might simply have missed something your vet will pick up. I require it in my puppy contracts(though I give them 72 hours)

I would give them both bath but I am with everyone there, my dogs always sniff each other at the spots shots were given at vets, etc. They sense something happening much sooner than you will see. Be safe.
