So another of Spitfire's age is lost

So the loss of another friend's Sheltie has me worrying more on Spitfire and pondering things.

Sca is obviously in heaven as he was such a friendly, well behaved dog that even his enemies (in flyball) had a hard time hating on him.
Angus was such a kind hearted guy and again super well behaved and gentle. If he is not in heaven it is because he paused in purgatory to bring people along with him on the rest of the trip.
Ian is awesome and thankfully still with me.

Which brings it to me and Spitfire. We agree on hating people though he also hates puppies so his is worse. And when the time comes I am pretty sure he is headed downstairs and will be evicting the red guy as king. Torturing people is his thing and of course there will be no puppies in @#$#

So I think I got all bases covered regardless of where I head. Though if downstairs I will have to defer to the Orange Horror like everyone else there.

The loss was one that was about a year younger. Not sure I know of a Sheltie buddy older than his 15.5 though I seem to recall Layla making it to 16.

And yet....I went out in the garage to groceries out of the car. For some reason Spitfire decided to follow me. There is two steps down, here crashed on the first. Then goes sliding down and across the cement floor. Jumps up and off he goes. I bring stuff in but he cannot get up any stairs so he is stranded. I go get him and when I set him down he blasts around the house ricocheting off furniture (his leg strength is just gone) Then he decides he needs to go out with Ian so I open the door and he bounces off the door frame and he is out. He still has the will to go crazy just not the strength.

pretty sure that Gavin made it to 17 and Dixie was almost 16........................

These sunset years are precious in their own way. You gotta love Spitfire's spirit.
Oh yea he still is him and loves to stir #$#@. For anyone that does not know I had a name picked for him before he came home. It just did not fit though and so he did not have a name for almost a month. Then one day he was being himself and it hit me. His name has always fit and not something he lived up to. Kennel name was Timmy, so by the memes.... but change the caption to 'you got yourself in there moron now get yourself out, and hurry because you need to be filling my supper bowl'

I honestly did not think he would make it through June but he 'recovered'. Though the decline is obvious and he is at that stage of life where one day is better then the downslide goes further. Still a happy guy though and that is what matters. Me and Ian have to guide him sometimes though as he can get confused and fall into neutral. Usually a light tap brings him out of it and off he goes with us. Pretty sure his hearing is either gone or close but he sees decent I think. Still can clean his food bowl and the anti-inflammatory helps. In June they prescribed 1pill twice a day but the vet hesitated because of his size (he is always on the edge of weight margins). It helped but that and the pain upset his stomach. Once he recovered some I cut them back. Now no pain meds and he gets 1/2 twice a day and not all days. Seems to help with less side effects.

Well got to go, food bowls to fill and necks to rub.

Oh and while he has always been incredibly OCD even for a Sheltie if anything even more. He has his spots so it is fairly easy to keep tabs on him. Check about 4 places either inside or outside and he is likely in one. If not outside call Ian and wherever he came from look that way and Spitfire will be there. Inside it is more, OK what have you got into so I can rescue him.

If it makes you feel better, Checkers was 17 and Lacey was 16. I think it depends a lot on the dog. Ruffles, who's Lacey's daughter, is a very old 13. I'm not sure how much time I'll have with her between heart issues and pretty serious doggie dementia. She's always been pretty sedentary though, as opposed to Lacey and Checkers who were more like Spitfire. So I deduce that the activity level seems to contribute to longevity. If that's true, Spitfire should have a number of years left! Fingers crossed.... :fl

I wish I could agree but between failing leg strength and what seems to be dementia starting. Though who knows as long as he is happy. Oh and activity has plummeted though that makes the rare zoom even more valuable.

it's probably like people - the more active you are, the better shape you seem to be in and activity helps with preventing/delaying dementia......
I'm keeping Destin competing in rally so that he stays more active. he just can't be too active with the heart issue:((
