So just how toxic is Chocolate?

I have never administered hydrogen peroxide, I wouldn't even know how to get it into the dog.
a syringe..ive done it before..usually works rather quickly...if in a pinch though you can do it with one of those little disposable bathroom size cups..those fold nicely and you can funnel it in.

One of our dogs -- not a Sheltie -- got into a box of Chocolate covered macadamia nuts that friends had brought us back from Hawaii and ate them all. She ate them while we were at work, and it caused horrible diarrhea that we had to clean up when we got home, but she didn't have any lasting symptoms.

I didn't realize at the time how toxic chocolate could be to dogs, and I was never sure if it was the chocolate that upset her tummy or the nuts. They're horribly high in fat!!

I think it does count what Chris stated. My setter ate a whole bag of M&Ms and it did not do anything to him that my dear son left in his room. UGGG.

My friend's kids when they were little had their tiny little dog do a treasure hunt with M&Ms and oh that dog got so sick. He was rushed to the vet to get a shot.

So I quess size matters vs how much the dog eats.

I posted this a couple of years ago after Tully's spate of chocolate eating. I kept it on the fridge for a long time, but recently took it down - fingers crossed I've gotten a lot better about either storing or eating straight away any choc in the house. Probably too late to help but its worth keeping in mind.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

After Tully's run in with a bag of smarties I discovered the toxicity levels for chocolate and what happens when a dog eats too much (thanks to our long suffering local vet).

This is for toxicity levels (ie levels that have a harmful effect).
Milk
Chocolate 63.0gm per 1 kilo of dog [1 ounce per pound)
Dark chocolate 20.5gm per 1 kilo of dog [0.3 ounces per pound)
Cooking chocolate 7.0gm per 1 kilo of dog [0.12 ounces per pound]

Death can occur
Milk chocolate 140-280gm/kg of dog
[2.23-4.5 ounces per pound]
Cooking chocolate 15-31gm/kg of dog [0.24-0.5 ounces per pound

Signs of toxicity - the most obvious signs are an increased heart rate and associated tremors or shaking.

However, as we discovered, doggies can still get very sick on lesser amounts (way too much caffeine and sugar). Tully began vomiting about 2hrs (small liquid vomits) after ingesting and it reduced after 2 hours but she kept vomiting for 9 hrs! Runny green poo appeared about 14 hrs later.

The imperial calculations in the square brackets I just did using an online calculator.

Well, all I can say is this.....

You know that I call Bacca "Eeyore" because he just kinda bumbles his way through life, mostly with his sad sack face.

Well, for the last two days, Bacca has been more like Tigger....boing, boing, boing!

Seems Indy may have been part of the chocolate eating escapade as well. I must admit that Indy was pretty bouncy too.

But both seem fine.

Oh no.... Bouncy Shelties X 2 :gaah
I just read all this now....So thankful that they are alright :fl
Treesa sends licks and stink eye looks..Boys :eek2: don't do that again!!

So I've just arrived at work, and its order day and I'm already behind schedule. And I'm opening the store...noone else there.

Son calls....Mom, Bacca just ate 3/4 of a bar of pure dark chocolate (you know those bars that about 2 inches wide and 4 inches long). But I'm late for school and gotta go....Bye!

Oh Crap! What to do? Do I race home and haul him to the vet for $300 worth of testing for chocolate poisoning. Being a terrible mom, I decide no.....I'll be home by 2 p.m. he should be fine until then. 2 p.m. rolls around and I'm still at the store. 3 p.m. and I'm still at the store. 4 p.m. and I'm now racing home. Hit everything single red light along the way. Stomach now in knots because I'm afraid of what I will find.......

Walk in the door, expecting to see vomit and a dog in convulsions on the floor. Nope! Bacca is doing leaps and pirouettes! Feed me, feed me!

Don't get it.....just how toxic is chocolate?????:confused2::confused2:

I really don't know...but Earnhardt (bless his heart) ate a half a bag of M &M's..I mean a half bag..and never phased him. But being almost 90lbs at the time may have had something to do with it. But certainly we were in quite rthe panic. He had more reaction to eating a live..then dead rabbit than with the M&M's...Go figure.
