Socialization without putting paws on ground

Blaze doesn't have full protection yet, so by the vet's orders, he's either in the carrier, in my arms, or in the yard.

Socialization? Televisions, computers, printers, mirrors, ramps, stairs, boxes, different textures underfoot--carpet, vinyl, wood, cement, grass, umbrellas :wink2:, oxygenators, walkers, the noise of traffic, driving in the car (in a carrier)--but even over railroad tracks, parking lots, walking (in my arms or in the carrier), waiting rooms in doctors offices, men (with beards and with or without hats), women, children, dusters, brooms, combs, the pinbrush (well he COULD do better with that), still working on the leash (he accepts it but still looks askance at it--like it's going to bite :rolleyes2: ), collar, veterinarian exams and handling (checking teeth, checking eyes & ears, petting--sit nicely and "no open mouth", checking paws, gently handling tail.) What am I missing or need to do better?

Seems like you have it covered.

btw....while I would not suggest a walk in an open dog park, I don't agree with NOT taking your pup for walks until final shots. You can also take your dogs to pet shops, but again leashed and keeping an open eye to anything he might get into.

As long as you have control of your dog and not allow him to eat or get to close to anything, I have no problem with starting walks earlier. In fact, earlier the better, before they start to develop the fear factor that often occurs after about 12 weeks or so.

If another dog approaches, just pick up pup. I do believe in building natural immunity, btw....just like with people.

I took Pyper with me to all of our club training meetings. I just put her in an ex en on a tarp. I cleaned the tarp each time with a diluted bleach.

We can't walk our puppies here at all until fully vaccinated! One of my friend's puppies is just recovering from Parvo and the puppy was fully vaccinated. It is everywhere around here!

I am with Dawn. Gosh, "thou shalt not touch the ground until one week after final shots". We just got carried every place I thought they would let me in. I found every single place that did not have food and politely asked at the door if I could carry my puppy through. Most said yes. The best was outdoors malls where I could step inside each shop and ask and then go to the next one. When he was complete with the shots we went to a pet friendly mall and walked in and out of all the stores. To this day my boy loves to shop (still go to Hobby Lobby & Home Depot & Lowe's which all allow well behaved pets).
