something is wrong with my sheltie(advantix related)

I have a 3 year old sheltie that has never had a problem. We have always used advantix 20 and under, but he gained a pound and my vet bumped us up to the 21-55 lb tube. I asked him if it was ok he assured me it was, so we used the whole first tube. That was a week ago now he hasn't had any side effects besides acting lethargic and just not himself. I called the vet today and the lady told me he was allergic to something in it. I'm just so worried about him now, I would just go crazy if something happened to him.. I'm just so upset about this now. I'm so afraid there is going to be some long term effect.

Did this start the day you applied it? or later?

First thing you need to do is take him in for an exam. No one can tell you over the phone that is the problem especially a receptionist. I had a client who swore up and down his dog had a vaccine reaction(he was vomiting 2 days later) and turned out to have a foreign body obstruction from eating a dozen baby bottle nipples.

After your vet examines him and determines he is stable(and doesn't need any other treatment) and that is indeed the cause. You should bath him in dish washing detergent to remove the rest of the product from his coat. Given that it has been a week the product is distributed in the hair coat but it will help.

Just be sure it is the problem first by getting an exam. Not saying that he could be having a problem with it. My Justice had a reaction to it. His reaction was hyperkinesis(tingling of the skin) and that cause him to itch like mad at his back creating a huge hot spot. No lasting effects after it was dealt with. Just saying make sure that is the issue. Lethargy can be a sign of so many things.

It was later, the problem was when I called they told me over the phone what I explained was from the medicine. She told me to bring the rest in and exchange it for advantage. They told me to wait till the weekend and see if he gets better. I'm just so worried nowthat something could be wrong. I'm probably freaking out over nothing but he is just so out of it.

Is he eating????? I myself probably wouldn't wait till the weekend considering this is only Wed. Like Dr. Shelli said, it could be something else....

He doesn't have any signs of a major problem. He is eating, normal poop, no vomiting but he is panting hard and fast while sleeping, very thirsty and just acting mopey. He still has been chasing me at softball and going for walks and reacting to treats and people at the door.

Bath, now. In dish soap.

Return the rest of the big dog Advantix and get Sheltie sized.

Advantix is the most toxic of the topical pesticides, and the only one any of my dogs has reacted to. Lethargy and not eating for several days were the symptoms here.

Did you apply Advantix II or the Advantix? There's a new chemical in Advantix II.

It could be a number of things... could be the dosage of Advantix is too high, could be the new chemical in Advantix II or could be something totally unrelated to Advantix.

If he hasn't been himself for a few days, I would consult with a vet.

Can one of the vets here explain this to me? It is truly weight dosed? or is it a surface area thing, and weight is just the easiest way to do it? Because I can't imagine that my 16"/28 pound dog needs much more than my 16"/20 pound dog. Same height, same basic build, same hair...

well it had nothing to do with the advantix(although i wont be using that again either way) he is having an allergic reaction to his shot for his grass allergies. He has received this shot 6 times (2x a yr) for three years but now he is allergic. He is fine, but wont be better for at least another 2-3 weeks. He will be boring and look depressed =(
Thanks for the help
