Spinal Stroke (FCE)

Thanks again everyone.

Hobbes walked today. He struggled a little but managed to get up and take a few steps. I've been taking him to physical therapy three times a week and he's responding well to the underwater treadmill. It's just amazing to see him move his little legs.

What wonderful news!!!!! Tears of joy flowing at this end.

You must be so proud of him, with just cause.

Good duty, Hobbes. Please give him a hug and a treat from me. Thanks.

ps We appreciate the updates.

Sorry I'm so late coming into this thread. I just sent you a PM.

So glad to hear that he's doing better!

Dealing with this type health issue can be so devastating and traumatic to the family as well as for the dog. Physical therapy early on is key, so you've done everything right.

I've talked to a number of people who have gone through this and all of their dogs have gone on to live full, happy lives after the stroke. No, none were 100%, but most were close to it.

Keep your chin up, have patience and don't give up. You will get through this. :hugs

So very glad to hear progress is being made by Hobbes. It is a real challenge but hopefully he will continue to heal. My thoughts are with you.

I just wanted to share a quick update in this thread in case anyone ever needs some hope.

Hobbes is now walking completely on his own. His back legs are still a little weak, which is normal given that he was completely paralyzed for around 10 days. But he can walk, run and is back to his usual self. I keep him in a crate during the day to avoid possible injuries. He tries to walk up the stairs on his own, which still makes me a little nervous.

I take him to walk on an underwater treadmill three times a week in order to maximize his recovery. They also use laser therapy on his spine. He took his first steps on the same day that his physical therapist used the laser, but it's hard to know if it really has an effect on him. We're now doing strength building exercises, forcing him to put most of his weight on his back paws. We use this:

Hobbes doesn't really like the pods but he still uses them for a few minutes. I put two under his front paws so most of his weight is directed toward the back.

I just want to thank everyone for their kind words and support. FCEs are absolutely horrible but once you get through the initial shock, things really do start to get better. It just takes time and patience.

Thanks for the wonderful update.

So very happy to hear Hobbes is doing so well.

Continuous prayers are going out for him.

I had been wondering how Hobbs was doing and am so happy to read this positive update!! WTG Hobbs!!!!! :) This is really wonderful news....without the timely great medical care any your dedicated rehab care the outcome for Hobbs would not have been such a good one. Big kudos to everyone involved.
